Feminine Home Office Makeover Reveal

From messy and cluttered to organized and beautiful, this feminine home office makeover is packed full of smart organizing and decorating ideas!

Bookshelf Storage in an Organized Home Office

Yippee!!! The day is finally here! I have been waiting and waiting to finally finish my home office and share it with you, and I’m so excited to do it right NOW! Well, almost right now. First, let’s take a look at where we came from:

before we updated the office

Let’s be honest– my office/craft space was a wreck. I had thrown together whatever leftover pieces I had in my house to hold all of my office supplies and crafting materials, but I just didn’t have the storage I needed to really make the space work for me.

Not only that, but the walls were also dark and there was no real decor anywhere other than leftover projects lying around. It was definitely not an inspiring work space!

office clutter before updating

I am happy to say though, that I am now completely in love with my little home office! It has certainly come a long way in the last month, and I can’t wait for you to see it– are you ready to finally see how this space was transformed? C’mon in! I’ll give you the grand tour!

What We Did in Our Home Office Makeover

1. Paint

I really wanted to keep this room light and bright as opposed to the dark-ish, murky space it was before, so I went with a lot of white and some pops of color to really get the mood I was going for. The paint color in this room is Behr Gentle Rain.

My desk/craft table area is the first thing you see when you enter the room. I kind of feel like this wall needs a disclaimer like those ones you see in standardized testing booklets that say, “This space left intentionally blank.” 🙂

Many of the pictures I use on the blog are taken here, so I needed a big, blank area on the wall for photo purposes. I did sneak in my scrappy bunting up high out of the way, though, to add some color and interest to this side of the room.

Choosing paint Colors For a Bigger Feeling Space

  • To make an office look bigger, lighter colors like whites, off-whites, and light grays, along with light blues and greens are great.
  • Statement walls or dark colors should be used sparingly to add pops of color so it’s not too busy, or so the room doesn’t become too dark.

2. Desk Drawer Storage

My desk didn’t have any built-in storage, so I had to add some myself. If you look closely, you can spot the little drawer unit I brought in. I mostly utilized shelving for storage in this space, but there were a few items that worked better in drawers, so they got tucked away under my desk/crafting table.

Each drawer got a label on the front, a pretty liner, and an organization overhaul! (Learn more about how to organize a desk here.)

Moving counter-clockwise around the room, the far wall is taken up by a window and a grouping of framed prints.

3. New Curtains

I went with plain white curtains in this room, and now I want them in every room of my house! They are just so light and airy, and I purposely left them a little long so they would drape dreamily on the floor… sigh…

Long curtains hung closer to the ceiling make the room appear bigger and the windows seem more grand.

4. Wall Art

To the left, you’ll see the mini gallery wall featuring some adorable prints I purchased from Pretty Print Shop on Etsy. I asked Hannah to customize some of the colors of prints she already had in her shop, and they came out perfectly (and were super affordable too!).

Each print has a scripture reference on it, so they’re not only beautiful, but they’re great reminders to me as well!

In the past, I have also created by own reverse canvas wall art and transformed thrifted frames by only using a few supplies!

5. Storage Cabinets

Oh, what’s that sneaking in the picture right beside the art? Could it be some amazing new storage?!

Upgrading the storage cabinets

Using wrapping paper, drawer liner, or wallpaper is a great way to add pops of color to shelving and cabinet units without making the room too busy.

Ahhhhhhh!!!! This is so my favorite part. I mean would you just LOOK at all of that storage space?! This room was seriously lacking in the storage department before, but not anymore!

After debating about the best way to add storage to this room, I finally decided on two bookshelves with a cube unit in between. My revamped pegboard was the perfect final touch, adding storage and a pretty pop of color at the same time.

I could not have asked for more perfect pieces for this space, and by combining all three we were able to store everything we needed, and it’s pretty too!

Now at first I was a little worried about how I would display everything on open shelves without it getting too messy, but the addition of the beautiful woven storage baskets helped me to store whatever I needed discreetly.

Anyone noticing a trend? You don’t have to spend much time on this blog to figure out that I am just slightly obsessed with labeling. I label everything!

I added bookplates to most of the baskets and bins so that I could mark their contents. And then I went on a little labeling spree with my Silhouette, using vinyl letters to label just about everything else!

four image collage of different office essentials on the new shelving system

And yes, I have a vessel completely devoted to sweets. In my office, you’d better believe there is going to be chocolate available at all times! 😀

Labeling resources

Make your own labels by using a Cricut or Silhouette cutting machine. I also have a tutorial for how to make your own labels in Microsoft Word and in Canva.

One of the things I’ve been trying to be more intentional about is writing notes to encourage others. To help me in my quest, I made a shelf with a stack of notes, some pens and a cute print, so hopefully it will remind me to get writing!

decorative items on the office shelves

Along with the using the bookshelves for storage, the cube unit was put to good use as well with (labeled) bins to hold my fabric and some room for books and magazines, too…

blue bins and books on a shelf

…which are, of course, arranged by color! (I have always wanted to do that! 🙂 )

side view of books and bins lined up on the shelf

Swoon!! Above the cubes is the pegboard I revived a few weeks ago. I am loving how easily accessible everything is and how it all looks so neat and tidy, too!

Even more labeling and sorting by color… yippee!!

Oh and remember my final little piece of art from Monday? It’s here too!

You know that no room makeover is ever complete without some “before and after” shots (my favorite part!), so let’s take a quick look…

I get a perma-grin plastered on my face every time I look at those! I can’t believe I get to work in this incredible space!

I love the peg board and labeling (I’m a little OCD). One of my favs though was your notecard shelf. I’ve been thinking about writing letters of encouragement as well, because I love a hand written note. Such a great idea you had! Thanks so much for the inspiration.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thank you for visiting, Ruth! The jar is from the Target Dollar Spot. I think it was a package of two for $3 or something like that. I got it about a month ago, so they may still have them! Hope you have a wonderful week!

      ~Abby =)

  91. I smiled really big when I saw you had a ‘sweets’ bowl!! 🙂 It would be GONE in our office (mostly from my husband.) 😉 Your makeover turned out AMAZING! A suggestion for your drawers under your desk…if you have an IKEA near you, there are couch legs that match your desk legs that are short and would make your drawers a bit taller and easier to reach. 🙂 In case you ever wanted them taller.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thanks so much, Shelly! Yes, the sweets are a must! 🙂 Great suggestion with the couch legs– I’ll have to check those out the next time I’m at IKEA! Thanks so much for stopping by!

      1. Hi Abby, I looked for the baskets you put the paints in and can’t find them at IKEA. I am bummed. Help?

  102. I love the colors you used in your office! I’ve wanted to make over one of my rooms into a work space for a while, but can’t commit to exactly what I want the room to look like. Your photos are inspiring! Thanks for sharing!

  105. Your office is so dreamy! I LOVE the storage. Oh, I just wish I had the space to do this! Right now my workplace is the dining room table. =(

  106. Hello!
First of all I’d like to say that you are such an amazing inspiration to me! I want your life haha 🙂 …
The reason I’m commenting though, is that I was curious about your vinyl labeling. I have a cricut which I have recently discovered also cuts vinyl though I have no experience with using it. After you cut your vinyl, did you have to do anything special to apply it? Is there any surface you’ve found doesn’t quite work?

    Thanks so much!

  107. Hi Abby! Your home office is wonderful and you must be really happy working there. It makes me dream of remaking my home office, but right now it’s full of stuff I need to organize. Yours is an inspiration! Thank you.

  108. Any chance you’d want to share your scripture art? I could sure use it. Thanks!!!1

  109. Hi Abby! I’m so glad I stumbled across this.. I was totally planning on heading to Staples tomorrow to organize/decorate my home office (proud founder of a newly established nonprofit organization here), then I found this post! You did such an incredible job with yours that it’s inspiring. Definitely just got some ideas for my own. But, I have to ask, was Staples affordable? I guess I’m just wondering where I would get the most bang for my buck. Hope to hear from you! You are so creative!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Yay! Congrats on your new non-profit! Staples was pretty affordable. I usually look at a bunch of the major retailers– Staples, Target, IKEA, etc.– to see what everyone has when I’m ready to buy. Prices fluctuate, so different places may be running deals at different times. Have fun setting up your office!

      ~Abby =)

  110. I absolutely love how you labeled everything. What font did you use for the vinyl to make the labels?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thanks so much, Jennifer! The font is called Jenna Sue. Have a wonderful Easter!

      ~Abby =)

  111. Wow, what a great transformation! I really love the colors and the storage place is truly amazing.

  114. Would like to get an idea of what laptop I should purchase to start my own blog.?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi Shelley! Donnie and I both use Macs, but if you are more comfortable using a PC, I would recommend that. Either will work!

      ~Abby =)

  115. Sara Mitchell says:

what a beautiful space …. it is very calming.

  116. Where did you get the drawer storage that is under the deak??

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Sarah! It is from Michael’s! They have a lot of cute storage cubes like that one. I hope this helps! Have a great day!

      ~Abby =)

  117. christianna johnson says:

Oh wow this transformation is gorgeous. You went hardcore Pinterest in there! I wish I had the space (and reason) to dedicate a room to a home office. I recently rearranged my bedroom–took the huge headboard-shelf thing off my full sized day bed, moved it into a corner, and got a desk. It looks so much better and I have so. Much. Floor space. I need more artwork though. Maybe some bunting. And maybe paint the desk…
    Anyway, awesome job!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Aw, thank you, Christianna! I definitely loved that office… one of my favorite projects for sure! Hope you’re having a great week!

      ~Abby =)

  118. Jennifer Miller says:

I love your idea of writing notes and having the cute paper as a reminder. I also love your baskets, I have been using baskets every where in my home. I love the added cuteness from baskets and that they can hide what ever it is I’m trying to hide 🙂 You office space is very cute.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Aw, thanks so much, Jennifer! Have a wonderful week! <3

  119. Hi there Abby, thanks to you I am about to begin my blogging story, and so I now follow you fairly closely, altho this is the first of your ‘random’ sort of posts i have looked at apart from the ebook and blogging tutorial ones, and i am grinning like the cheshire cat!
You are apparently what i call ‘a little bit OCD’ compared to me, but i say that in fun!! I wish i too had a craft area like that!!! One day… first things first!
Lovely to see signs that you too are a believer in the great ‘I am’, Jesus Christ! It is nice to be able to see that, without necessarily having it spoken as i think this is the strongest way to spread the gospel! By being someone others want to be associated with, and being willing to share God’s word however subtly it fits circumstances.
I hope to spend more time with you!
    Cheers!
    Jo

    1. justagirlabby says:

Lol! You are right— a tad OCD! 🙂 haha Thanks so much for the encouragement, Jo! Enjoy your blogging journey!

      ~Abby =)

  120. Abby, I found you just in time!!! I have a small room which used to be our office but now that we are retired I am claiming it for myself.. I have been wondering how I cam make it functional and yet a ‘HAPPY PLACE’. Your talent has inspired me. About how large is your room? Even your colors are so cheerful yet calming. Thank-You so much for sharing with others. I also appreciate your encouraging notes. You are a blessing!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thank you so much for your sweet note, Pat! We’re not in that house anymore, but I think the room was around 11′ x 13′. Have fun with your office!

      ~Abby =)

  121. I just bought a house and we’re using Google to paint and decor it. In the process, I found you. This is amazing!
    Felicidades!!!!
What kingd of green are you using to decorate. Teal or aqua? Why did you decide to decir with this color? Is this color I your house all year long?
I love these colors. I’m afraid to decir my new though. I leave in NY and seasons change.

    What do you recommend?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Evelyn! I like pretty much every shade of teal/turquoise/aqua/mint and use it in many rooms of my house all year. At Christmas I’ll sometimes tone down the aqua a bit in favor of more traditional Christmas colors, but other than that, I use aqua most of the time! 🙂 Have a great weekend!

      ~Abby =)

  122. Love this. What did you use for the back of the bookcases? I love the way it dressed them up some. Thanks
