Aqua and White Fall Living Room Decor

Our aqua and white fall living room decor has our home feeling welcoming and festive for the autumn season!

Of all of the rooms in our house, the living room may have experienced the greatest transformation since we moved in. To be quite honest, I was a bit worried about decorating this room at first.

It was such a big, wide open space that it felt hollow and bare, even when I started adding decor. The murky white paint color that our builder had chosen made the room feel stark and sterile. It was a far cry from the cozy, welcoming atmosphere that I was picturing.

This space took a little while to come together. On the first day we moved in, the room felt so empty that I sent Donnie to IKEA to buy the EKTORP love seat that matched the couch and chair we already owned.

I eventually found a rug and coffee table that I liked, which also helped bring more layers into the space. When I brought our front porch chairs in for the winter, I liked them so much that they stayed in here too! (Don’t worry– the front porch got new chairs! 😉 )

Filling the Walls in the Living Room

My biggest struggle when I decorate any room in our house is probably filling the walls. I love picking textiles and furniture. I love styling surfaces and shelves. But for some reason, walls are really hard for me. And the living room had a ton of wall space.

To fill up the wall by Donnie’s office door and make the TV look a little less offensive, we created a “built in” unit using pieces from IKEA’s BESTA system. To make it look a little more custom and finished, we added our own trim work as well. One wall down!

We went from 7.5′ ceilings in our townhouse to 9′ ceilings in our current house, so all of the art I had owned looked minuscule when I tried to use it on these walls!

I had the idea to add a high board and batten treatment to give the space some character and help fix my empty walls situation. It worked like a charm! (Board and batten paint color is Behr Marquee Cameo White, and the wall color is Behr Marquee Silver City.)

Other details like curtains, a blanket ladder, and an old door that I had painted, helped to fill in some wall space as well.

Once I had my basic setup in place, it became easier to decorate for each season.

Our Whole House Uniform

Shortly after moving into this house, I decided to adopt a “whole house uniform.” I chose one color scheme– aqua and white and lots of neutrals– and use it in nearly every room of our home, even for our seasonal decor.

This allows me to easily shop my house to redecorate spaces, and I can keep less decor around because I’m not changing color schemes all the time.

This strategy may not be for everyone, but I love how it has helped us cut clutter, save money, and not accumulate a ton of stuff. (I also love that my house is decked out in my favorite colors all year long!)

For fall, I keep a lot of my regular decor pieces out and simply add in some pumpkins and acorns to bring in that autumn feel. So easy!

I find a lot of my faux pumpkins at Target’s Dollar Spot, Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, and HomeGoods. I mixed in some real white mini pumpkins from Trader Joe’s as well.

Probably my favorite spot to decorate seasonally is the shelves surrounding the TV– so many possibilities! (I often am asked where all of our books are since we don’t have any on these shelves. Most of them are on shelves in Donnie’s office, which is through that door on the right. 🙂 )

I talked about my strategy for decorating shelves like these ones in this post. Basically, I choose a color scheme and then try to vary the heights and depths of the items on each shelf. Adding in lots of natural elements and cozy textures helps too!

I’m kind of a slow decorator. I will put things up and then leave them there for a few days. Then every once in a while I’ll walk past and switch a couple things around. I keep making little tweaks until it’s *just right.*

My boys have just gotten used to seeing decor items being switched around and alternated all the time at this point!

I’ve found that a lot of shelf styling is just trial and error to figure out what you like. Some people like pretty minimalist shelves. Some people like a really full look. I’ve found that I fall somewhere in between!

The great thing is that there is no one “right way” to do it. Do what you love!

A Few Fall Details in the Kitchen

Our kitchen is in the same space as our living room, and I kept it pretty simple this year, with just a wreath and a few vases of hydrangeas from our bush in front of the house.

I did style my tiered tray with some cute fall items to give our island a little centerpiece!

Since the weather finally started to cool down around here, it’s really feeling like fall both outside our house and inside, and I am loving it!
