A Cozy Office Nook

It’s here! I promised I’d be back with a completed cozy office nook, and I can’t wait to share it with you today!

From the moment we first decided on the floor plan for the new house, the room I was most excited about was my office. Since it is the bonus room over the garage, it’s one of the largest rooms in the house, and I immediately started thinking about how I would use all of that space! So many possibilities!

But as we moved in and started getting the house all set up, my office moved further and further down the priority list. I just couldn’t justify working on a space that would only benefit me when so many of the main living spaces that everyone used needed a lot of attention.

A Cozy Office Nook

As we got closer and closer to Mother’s Day though, my wheels started turning. What I really wanted for Mother’s Day was a cozy little spot where I could work, relax, and go to kind of escape from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house. And while I knew that a whole office overhaul wasn’t in the cards anytime soon, I could certainly do a quick little makeover on the small nook space in my office, right?!

I pitched the idea to Donnie and he was all for it (Isn’t he the best?!), so I made a plan for the space, which I shared with you all on Tuesday. I’m happy to say that with a fresh coat of paint, some new furniture pieces, and a few accessories, we were able to transform my little nook from this:

To this:

Quite a difference, right?! I think I found my new favorite spot in the house!

Since I knew I would be working in this space, I definitely needed a desk, but I also wanted to have a cozy chair where I could kick back and relax as well– this tufted arm chair from Joss & Main ended up being perfect.

I happened to find a matching footstool to complete this little corner, and is the most comfortable place to relax at the end of a long day (or first thing in the morning or at lunchtime or after the boys get home from school… okay, I’m in here all the time)!

Since “cozy” was the feel I was going for in this spot, I brought in an area rug to layer over the existing carpet (and even snuck in a little faux sheepskin rug too!), along with several pillows and a throw.

(I actually liked this rug so much that I got a smaller version of it to put in my kitchen in front of the sink!)

I normally keep the walls pretty neutral in our house– grays and whites are my go-tos– but since this was such a small space within the room, I thought a pop of color would be perfect. After trying a bunch of little samples, Sherwin Williams Rainwashed ended up being the winner, and I am smitten with it!

And flowers make everything better, right?! 🙂

My most favorite type of wall decor is shelves, so I picked up a few inexpensive picture ledges and filled them with frames I already had. Simple, easy, and beautiful!

AND I get to look at these boys’ cute faces every time I visit my nook! <3

I searched far and wide for the perfect desk for this little space, and I ended up falling in love with this one from Joss & Main. It is super sturdy, has a nice amount of storage space, and looks beautiful too– win-win-win!

I was worried that having two chairs in the nook would end up looking too cluttered, but this little X-back number was just the thing. It’s the perfect size for the desk and doesn’t take up much space at all.

Maybe it’s because we’re a little further out in farm country in this house, but I am loving weathered woods and have been incorporating them into just about every space. This one is no exception!

The lamp brings in more of the cozy vibe at night with its warm light, and the organizer allows me to keep some of my favorite things on the desk without it feeling too cluttered. Love.

So needless to say, if you need me anytime in the near future, I’ll be right here… 😉

I went from avoiding this space to never wanting to leave, so I’ll call that a win in my book! 🙂 If you’re curious about any sourcing information, I’ve included it all below.

Yes! I’m in here all the time now! 🙂 Thank you so much for your sweet words! Hope you’re having a great week, Randi!

    2. Hi! I am in love with the wall paint color of this cute office nook!! I followed the link and it took me to Sherwin Williams “rainwater” which is gorgeous but looks a little more green than your walls. Is that the correct color? Thanks!

      1. Abby Lawson says:

Hi, Justina! The color I used is Sherwin Williams Rainwashed. It definitely looks greener on a computer screen than it does on the walls. I’ve used it in several rooms in our house at this point, and it shows up aqua rather than green! I hope this helps!

  2. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING! Sooo cozy & incredibly inviting! Love it!!!

Thank you so much, Gail! That is so sweet of you! Hope you’re having a great week!

Looks beautiful! I have a little office nook as well and needed the inspiration!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thank you so much, Christy! I love the little nooks! They can be so functional & beautiful but are also small enough to spruce up fairly easily! 🙂 Hope you’re having a great week!

  5. Kelly Howard says:

In your before pic you had some necessary office things like a printer and books and such. Where are those located now? Just so you know…I totally drooled over your new little space! It is the BOMB!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thanks so much, Kelly! This nook is part of a much bigger office, so the items you don’t see are just behind the camera. 🙂 Eventually we’ll get to overhauling the whole thing, so you’ll get to see everything in its final spot! Hope you’re having a great week!

      ~Abby =)

  6. Oh, so gorgeous! I would never want to leave! I need a home office makeover really soon, right now it’s the room I try to avoid looking at. I recently signed up for your Building a Framework course and I feel like I need to get myself organized before really jumping in so that I can make the most of the course, and that includes getting my “space” set up. This might be the kick in the butt… ahem, I mean, inspiration… that I needed ?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Lol! So glad it was helpful for you, Erica! I often need “inspiration” as well! 🙂 Good luck on your blogging journey! <3

  15. Hi Abby,
I love your style. So pretty. I can’t seem to find a price on the desk (Mitchell). Can you help? The chiar that goes with the desk looks cool too. Prices?
    Thanks

    1. justagirlabby says:

So strange that it’s not showing up on their site! Sorry about that! I found it on their sister site, Wayfair, here: https://www.wayfair.com/Viv-Rae-Sully-Computer-Desk-VVRO3990.html . They do have it on Joss & Main in the wood finish: https://www.jossandmain.com/Riley-Writing-Desk-DBYH6011.html . And this one is pretty similar to my desk: https://www.jossandmain.com/Ellis-Writing-Desk-DRBC5288.html . If you click on the photo of the desk chair, it will take you to the pricing on Amazon. (Though it’s showing $106 for me right now, and I think I only paid about $80 for it, so you may want to watch it and see if it goes down again! 😉 ) I hope this helps! Have a great day!

      ~Abby =)

  22. Roberta McColl says:

Ok, so I was a nerd and looked up SW Rainwashed on http://encycolorpedia.com/c2cdc6 and it turns out it’s Valspar cousin (Sparkling Lake) is the color of our family room/ kitchen color. I love that color and it’s a beautiful “neutral” without being white, beige, or gray.

    1. justagirlabby says:

I am loving that color too! I’m sure it’s beautiful in your family room/kitchen! It’s so serene! 🙂 Hope you are having a wonderful week, Roberta! <3

  23. Karen Joyce says:

Beautiful!! I would spend all my time in that gorgeous chair gazing out the window while I blog!! Soon we will be moving aboard our “new to us” 27′ sailboat and I will need to create space as we remodel. I’ll be watching your updates to get ideas I can apply to my new tiny house living.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Oh, wow! That sounds lovely! Good luck on your remodel and enjoy your time on the boat! <3

    1. justagirlabby says:

Yep, Palermo! Hope you love it as much as we do! I’m glad it has given you some inspiration… we are a work in progress over here for sure! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful week!

  25. momof3misses says:

I LOVE this. I have a question; how do you pull this together so quickly? I feel that it takes us so long to decide on a project and then execute it. Any thoughts appreciated.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thank you so much! I think everything seems quicker in “blog time,” lol. I started planning for this project probably in February or early March. I had the walls painted before my surgery (which was March 31) because I knew I wouldn’t be able to do it for a while after! And then I just put it together little by little from there. So there is usually a lot going on with a project behind the scenes before I start talking about it at all on the blog, if that makes sense. 🙂 I actually feel like I’m pretty slow at planning and pulling of a space in its entirety! Hope you’re having a great weekend!

      ~Abby =)

Lovely. I just finished a kitchen remodel. I am a renter of a large studio so I was limited, but I love it. Doesn’t it feel great to have a cozy space of your own? For me it’s the kitchen. ( I have a love seat in it.) Thanks for your post.

    1. justagirlabby says:

It really does! It makes me feel a little more put together (even though the other side of the room looks like a storage room :). Thanks so much for stopping by and have a great week! <3

  33. Rainwashed became my goto favorite color last year when we remodeled our master bedroom and bathroom. It is a feature wall color behind the bed and the color in the bathroom walls. I find it soothing and it doesnt suck the light out of the room. This was important in the bathroom which had no windows to the outside.

Your office nook looks cozy, functional and very decluttered now. Good work!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Isn’t it the best? I am LOVING it! So serene! Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful week! <3

  37. Nice looking space – but where did you put the printers and the books / files?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thanks, Amanda! This nook is part of a much bigger office, so those items are just in the other part. Eventually we will overhaul the whole thing, so I’ll be sure to show how I organized all of those things! Have a wonderful week!

  43. Hi Abby, this rooms encourages creativity and I love the peaceful “colour” (yes, I’m from Australia) of the walls. In fact you’ve convinced me to paint a feature wall of my bedroom in that shade. I have swatch of it on my fridge as a reminder. Our version is called “Sea Sprite”. Enjoy your special space Abby.

  49. Kayla @ Mince Republic says:

Looks really good! It really is important to have a space that inspires you to do your best work. At least for me, I find that physical clutter leads to mental clutter as well and it makes it difficult to get things done. Happy you were able to get this set up!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Totally agree! Thanks so much, Kayla! Have a great evening! <3

      ~Abby =)

  50. OMG! I thought I was in love with your office space in your last house, but this one is so cozy!! I am definitely going to have to figure out how to make a nook in my tiny little house.

Thank you, Mary! I am loving it, too! So serene! 🙂 Hope you’re having a wonderful week! <3

  51. I adore the transformation! You have inspired me to create a much more serene desk space for myself…first thing in the morning. While my “office” is really in the hallway/dining room, at least I have a beautiful desk my husband made for me. Time to rethink the office space I do have!

    Have a beautiful day 🙂

  56. I am adoring this space! I live in a small house so I am soaking in the pretty, simple decor you’ve put together in your nook. Question, I am an Interior Designer/blogger (who started because of your fantastic tool, Building a Framework!) and generally feel like I need lots of space to spread things out. Do you feel this desk gives you the space you need for blogging?

Hi Steffani! I typically blog on my laptop sitting at the desk or in the upholstered chair in the nook, and there is plenty of room for that. If I am doing a project, I typically do that in the larger part of the room where I have some bigger surfaces set up. I hope this helps! Have a great day!

  57. I recently moved and have a tiny room for an office (it’s about 10×10). A few people have suggested a light color accent wall but several have said it may close in the room and make it feel smaller and darker. Do you feel like your paint color choice (absolutely beautiful, by the way) had the opposite effect? Any certain reason(s) you chose that color in particular? Thanks so much! Just stumbled across your blog and I can’t stop reading! ?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Erika! Thank you so much for your sweet words! I think as long as your accent wall is a lighter color rather than a darker one, you won’t have trouble with the room feeling smaller. I just really like aqua and after trying a few different samples, this one (Sherwin Williams Rainwashed) was my favorite! I like that it adds some color without being too bold. I hope this helps!

  58. Stunning space, I’m in love with that color as well! I’m wondering where and how you organized the books and files in the before photo. I’m in the process of having to move my office to a new smaller space and I’m having storage issues.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi Denise! They are currently in a little makeshift system on the other side of the room because we haven’t tackled the rest of the space yet, lol! We are planning on starting on this room at the beginning of the new year, so stay tuned! 🙂

  59. Great space and love the changes! Just wondering where that cute rustic and chic paper/desk organizer thing is from?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Sam! That was a HomeGoods find! 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  60. Hi Abby – thanks for your inspiration! I am taking over a space in my house as my new office and have the same color palette. I love your chair and am planning to order the exact same one. I see yours has a matching ottoman but for the life of me, I cannot seem to locate an ottoman that matches the chair on Joss and Main or any other site that carries this brand (Coaster, I believe). Did you have yours custom made or do they just not make it any more? If it was custom made, how did you match the fabric? Thanks for any help you can give!

      1. Thank you so much for your quick reply and willingness to help! Thanks also for the inspiration on your blog.

        Have a great day!

  61. So pretty!! Where did u get the comfy chair? loved it!

Hi Abbey, I teally like your office nook. What if you don’t have a room to designate to an office ? Is there another way to create an office area besides the diningroom table?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Rose! You could fit a small desk in the corner of another room, perhaps? It’s hard to say without seeing your home’s layout. When we lived in a one bedroom apartment, Donnie used a secretary desk in the corner of the living room. He could flip it out and work when he needed to and then easily shut it up and hide everything away when he wasn’t working. It worked well for us! Hope you’re having a great week!

Where did you purchase the wood paper organizer for the desk? Love the detail on it!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Michelle! Thanks! I got it from HomeGoods. 🙂

  64. Hi,
I’ve only just found this posting and sure you’ve moved on since “nook” days
could you possibly give me an idea of the size of yours?
I’m trying to work out my own little nook and my furniture is similar to yours
so thought if I knew size you worked with it would help.
Many thanks in advance, could you please answer as an email I’m nursing my
brother with terminal cancer & don’t have much time for net searching – thanks

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Lucy! I am actually sitting in this nook responding to your question right now! 🙂 It is part of a larger office space, but the nook itself is 8’10” x 6′. I hope this helps. Have a great day!

      ~Abby =)

  65. I saw where you said you got the desk organizer from is there by chance a brand on it? I love it, the size is perfect for where I would need it to go.

    Thanks!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Ahhh I just searched every inch of it and didn’t see any markings or brands anywhere. There may have been a sticker on it or something when I got it, but it has been a few years now, so I’m not sure. So sorry about that! TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Marshall’s all carry similar items, so it would be worth keeping an eye out at any of those places for it or something similar!

Setting up my new home office and love the idea of the rug that can pull the nook together. Thanks for the idea!

So glad it was helpful for you, Nicole! <3

  67. This is super cute! I’m struggling with colors for our new addition… Wanting airy as there’s lots of white windows, but over the greens that I painted much of the house in years ago. Blues and grays seem like my only option, but I’ve never been a big blue fan, and grey would be drab everywhere. YOUR combo looks great! Do you recall the gray color on the entrance wall of this nook? Thanks for your blog, I’m finding it quite refreshing!

    1. Abby Lawson says:

Hi there! The gray I use in my office (and in many parts of our house!) is Behr Marquee Silver City. 🙂 Have fun with your project!

  68. Beautiful room. Thanks for the inspiration. I could not find the chair. Do you have a direct link? Thank you.
