It’s kitchen reveal day!!! Part of me thought this day would never come! We ripped out our old kitchen during the last week of June, and we are nearing the end of October, so it has been a LONG process! I am so thrilled with the way everything came out, though, and I cant wait to share allllll of the details with you. {I will be sure to include a list of sources and links to all of the individual DIY projects at the end of the post.}

The kitchen was the biggest eyesore in our house, so much so that before this reno, I almost never showed it on the blog. Because it was scary. And if your children saw it they would run away screaming. 🙂 Just as a reminder, when we moved in, the kitchen looked like this:

Yikes. I could not even handle the faux laminate wood for one single minute, so one of the first things we did was paint the cabinets white and change out the hardware.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have budget to do anything with that interesting fruit backsplash yet, so we left it alone, and this is the kitchen we lived with for about 6 years. By that time, the paint on the cabinets was chipping, some of the drawers were saggy and broken, and if I had to look at one more piece of fruit on that backsplash, I was going to pull my hair out! 😀

So this summer we ripped out everything and started over. And when I say “we” I mean that mostly Donnie did the grunt work and I just picked out all of the stuff and did some painting. {Which is an equally important and difficult job… 😉 } After months of planning, demo, drywalling, painting, grouting, measuring, installing, sewing {yes, I even sewed!}, rearranging, and eating lots and lots of microwavable meals, this is what we ended up with…

Woohoo! So much better! I now get a big silly grin on my face every time I walk in the kitchen rather than cringing at the ugliness that was our old kitchen!

When we started making plans for the new space, I knew I wanted it to be light and bright! We went with the new IKEA SEKTION kitchen cabinets with GRIMSLOV door fronts {which are actually slightly off-white}, and we have been thrilled with them so far. {Donnie talked all about the cabinet installation in this post.} The curtain fabric set the accent colors– aqua & green– and I also brought in a bunch of wood tones to warm things up a little bit.

Repurposed Kitchen Sideboard. Beautiful white IKEA SEKTION GRIMSLOV kitchen with aqua and green accents, a gorgeous marble hexagon backsplash, and quartz countertops. | JustAGirlAndHerBlog.com

This little repurposed sideboard wasn’t part of the original kitchen plans and ended up in here by accident! One day I pushed it in front of the window to get it out of my way, and when I stepped back and looked at it, I realized it fit absolutely perfectly! I gave it a little paint job and some new knobs, and it settled nicely into its new home. {The color is Iron Mountain by Behr.}

On the same wall as the sideboard is my little piece of DIY art. This hymn is one of my favorites, and I love having a permanent place for it in our home as a constant reminder.

I found that little wild grapevine wreath in the corner at Trader Joe’s for $4! I couldn’t pass it up!

And oh the sink. This could quite possibly be my favorite little nook in the whole kitchen.

We chose a farmhouse-style sink paired with the Moen Align faucet— I truly never knew I could love a faucet so much. It is amazing. We talked about the installation process and features in this post.

The backsplash totally makes the kitchen as far as I’m concerned. It is from build.com, and from the second Donnie installed the first tile, I knew it was going to be perfect.

The countertops are quartz– Caesarstone Organic White, and we purchased them through IKEA. It’s hard to capture in a photo, but they really do have a lot of dimension and aren’t just flat white. The quartz has been fantastic so far.

I had so much fun searching out accessories for this space. I even rounded up my favorites in this post.

The two cutting boards with handles are TJ Maxx finds. A family friend *made* the striped one for me, and it is amazing!

I’ve found myself drawn to all things hexagon during this renovation, so this hex tray {from Target} was a welcome addition.

The drawers and cabinets are all soft-close, which has been fantastic, especially for the Cs… you know how rough little boys can be! 🙂 All of the beautiful knobs and pulls are from D. Lawless Hardware.

The left side of the kitchen holds the fridge, range, and microwave– I love having the microwave off the counter! I feel like I have so much more space now! We had to close in a small, oddly shaped window between the kitchen and the dining room to get everything to fit, but it was well worth it!

And I can’t forget about our new and improved kitchen pantry, which is just a few feet away from this space!

Should we look at some before and after shots? The difference is pretty crazy!

{Ripping out that weird half wall and adding headers to the new cabinets made such a difference! Also the new light fixture from build.com is much better than the old “boob” light!}

Whew! It definitely took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to make it happen, but it is amazing to have a new kitchen that is so much more functional {and more beautiful, too}!

Thank you so much for following along with our kitchen progress! This has definitely been one of the biggest DIYs we’ve ever tackled, but it has also been the most rewarding!

I have to say a big, ginormous THANK YOU to Donnie who has put in hours upon hours upon hours building out this kitchen over the past few months and has put up with all of my ridiculous requests. Thanks, babe! It was worth it, right?! 😉 I may have to bide my time before I start bringing up any more renovations… lol!

Pssssttt… Wondering how we ended up liking our kitchen? See my honest IKEA kitchen review here!

Have you done any kitchen renovations lately? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!

Have a wonderful day, friends!

Your kitchen looks amazing Abby! I am especially drawn to the hexagon tiles and tray as my college age son recently started his own business called Hexacomb Shelving ( https://www.hexacombshelving.com ) that features wooden hexagon shaped shelving units that attach to each other magnetically so they can be reconfigured to fit any space. He even got to meet Daymond John of Shark Tank recently when he was chosen as a finalist in an inventor’s contest hosted in Atlantic City. Needless to say functionality and hexagons are a constant topic of conversation in our home, and your kitchen is beautiful, functional and even incorporates hexagons…how could I not love it? I definitely will be ordering one of those trays from Target as well. Thank you so much for the tour of your kitchen. You and Donnie did a wonderful job. Kudos to you both! I love your blog, your printables and all of the unique ideas you share.

Oh, Abby I love your kitchen! I want one IDENTICAL to it! lol! I have the faux laminate cabinets and we are going to get our kitchen redone soon, I have just been lazy about getting it started. It is such a big project and with 2 kids and just the thought of it makes me tired. The backsplash is my absolute favorite part, then the pull knobs and I just love the buffet table in your kitchen, too! So much eye candy! I bet you are really enjoying it!

  11. Love this. I’m looking at remodeling my kitchen and looked at IKEA too. I was concerned about the off white though as my counters are white milestone with the flecks of color and we want to reuse them. Does the off white cabinets look ok with a white counter and sink? Hard to tell from the pics.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thank you, Denise! Great question… the counter is a little off white too, so the cabinets, sink, and countertops are all different shades of white. I like how it looks in our kitchen, but if you like everything to match, these are definitely all different colors. At our IKEA we were able to go hold up a counter sample next to the cabinets and the sink to see if we liked them together, so that was helpful. Best of luck with your reno!

      ~Abby =)

      1. Eliesa @ Pinterest Addict says:

Do they look very creamy in real life, or are they more white-white? I am torn between the gray cabinet fronts and these, but I’m worried they are too creamy white.

        1. justagirlabby says:

I would say they looked white in person (definitely not the “yellow-ish” tinge that I associate with a cream), but not BRIGHT white. I was thrilled with the color. If you look at the cabinets next to the sink (which I would call bright white), you can see the difference. I would definitely take a trip to IKEA to see them before making a decision and hold them up next to your countertop choice if possible, as undertones in different pieces of the kitchen could make the cabinets look different as well. I hope this helps!

          ~Abby =)

  18. Tiffany (A Touch of Grace) says:

I love it Abby! Congrats on having it finished! The kitchen really is the heart of a home so having a nice space that you can enjoy makes a world of difference. Really love that backsplash!

  19. Cheryl Smith says:

I really like the white-on-white kitchen remodel. It really makes it look open and clean. I especially like your huge kitchen sink. Hopefully, my project will turn out just as beautiful.

  20. Amy | Delineate Your Dwelling says:

Oh my heavens. Such a wonderful job. I think that hex tile MUST be my favorite… and the sink. Love love love it.

  21. Love. Love. Love. The new kitchen is so beautiful! I love white kitchens and the best part is how little pops of color stand out and make such an impact. I might have to pick up one of those utensil holders. Super cute!
Just a heads-up on quartz counters, which we had in our last kitchen… they aren’t completely heat safe so you can’t take something straight out of the oven or off the burner and put it directly on the counter. It might be fine but there’s a possibility that it will crack the quartz top. I got this warning from my cabinet-maker who had to replace a section of his own counter when a hot pan cracked it. That would be such a bummer so I always put a towel or one of those IKEA cork trivets under a hot dish. Enjoy your new kitchen!!

  22. Wonderful outcome, looks so clean and fresh! Great work. The backsplash is awesome, so nice to see “out of the box” rather than just squares! How do you like the sink? I love it but I get nervous thinking of going from a double sink (with family of 5) to a single.
    Enjoy your new kitchen!

  23. Monica Lynn says:

And look what I missed! You’ve done an outstandingly beautiful job. I love the hexagon tiles, the hexagon tray, your simply beautiful styling and photography – so perfect! What an accomplishment. 39. I’ve been online looking at the GRIMSLOV (off-white) cabinets and I’m nervous that they’ll be too beige. I really want white cabinets with the shaker style look. In your photo’s they actually look WHITE! Can you really notice that they’re not white?

    1. Donnie Lawson says:

They look very white to me!

  42. janet helene says:

Wondering what made you choose black appliances for an all-white kitchen?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Money! 🙂 We already had some new-ish black appliances that work perfectly, so it was less expensive to just buy what we needed to match rather than replace the whole lot of them. This isn’t our “forever home” and the kitchen is already upgraded more than most of the other ones in the same neighborhood, so we didn’t feel the need to take on the extra expense. Have a wonderful weekend, Janet!

  43. I adore everything about this kitchen renovation! I think my favorite pieces are the hexagon backsplash and all of the accent pieces! What color is your Mosser Glass cake stand? Is it the Jadeite or a Blue?

What an amazing makeover Abby! You guys did an awesome job! We’ve done so much researching and scheming and my husband agrees that Ikea is the way to go! Thsnks fir all the tutorials and info! xo

  45. Lisette Reynolds says:

Hi Abby, I bumped in to your blog when in my research of how people like their Ikea kitchen cabinets. We have an Ikea close to us and we are thinking of going with their Bodbyn style in the gray color. We also have looked at Lowes Kraftmaid in greyloft. Lowes vs. Ikea is a toughie. How do you like your Ikea cabinets now that’s you’ve had them for a year? Have they held up? What’s your opinion of the quality compared to the well know home stores like Lowes? Please share.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Lisette! We are absolutely loving them! They have held up extremely well, are easy to clean, and still look as beautiful as the day we installed them. I would choose them again in a heartbeat. I’ve never personally owned cabinets from Lowe’s, so I can’t make a direct comparison, but I have no complaints about quality. I hope this helps!

wow…Abby, your kitchen is sooooo beautiful. I am speechless. Good job. Enjoy your new kitchen.

  47. George Taylor says:

This looks absolutely stunning, very well done. Here in New Zealand, we had our kitchen renovation done by a company called Love My Kitchen Benchtop. I am not really the DIY type and thankfully got a good deal for the entire job. I hardly made a contribution, except for the color and the bit of art that was added.

    1. justagirlabby says:

      Thanks so much, George!

      ~Abby =)

  48. Katherine says:

What a beautiful transformation! Can you tell me which color quartz countertop you chose? Wondering which one goes best with the off-white of the Grimslov
    Thanks!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Katherine! We used Caesarstone Organic White for the counters, which we purchased through IKEA. We LOVED them! I hope this helps!

      ~Abby =)

  49. Joan Polly says:

I really love your kitchen. This is a great blog post. I’m starting to renovate a small kitchen now too. I hardly ever see someone use a single door cabinet under their sink. I really like it. Did you get that sink at ikea. I don’t think I saw it on you items list. I hope mine comes out as well as yours!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Aw, thanks so much, Ruby! Have a wonderful day!

  50. I’ve been looking for a mint/aqua kitchen inspiration and your kitchen hit the spot 🙂 Now you know that a little kitchen in Norway will look a bit like yours 🙂

    1. justagirlabby says:

Yay! So glad it was helpful for you, Randa!

      ~Abby =)

  51. I love your kitchen, Can you share what cabinet and drawer and extra wood pieces you used to complete the sink undermount?
    Thank You

  52. I Love Love Love the entire room, but that little table under the window is what I love most. So gorgeous, homey and comforting and beautiful all at the same time. Fabulous job you two… (If anyone finds another “Donnie” out there, please look for another one for me too! Hahaha)
    Thanks so much for posting!

Aw, thanks so much, Sue! You’re too sweet! Donnie is one of the good ones for sure! 🙂 Hope you’re having a wonderful week! <3

      1. Hi Abby,

Actually I have a “sort of” Donnie, his name is Sid, and he builds furniture for me, plate racks, tables, (kitchen, dining room, TV stand, foyer, lamp tables, so on…) And he makes smaller pieces for me too, so I really am lucky… I can send you pictures if you have a place for me to send to, I am very proud of his work. He and I designed our whole house and I built it while he worked out of town, (thus saving our marriage, no doubt! haha)
Anyway, Love your blog/articles, and envy you your energy and good taste! Keep doing what you do and post everything so I can drool and be jealous! 😉
        Sue
(Email me at the address below and let me know if you would like me to send you some pics…and tell me where to send, if you are interested) Thanks!

  53. Hi Abby,

I actually found you through bydawnnicole.com who I found through a google search for handmade bookmarkers.

Both you and Dawn inspired me to try blogging, once again. I purchased and found your “Building a Framework” to be very useful and encouraging.

I’m not a person who is particularly enticed by printables, but Abby you have mad design skills! I’m enchanted by your beautiful site and the images you create and share. Your friendly, nurturing nature is like a warm, cozy fire.

Also, we have the same kitchen rug. 😉

Thanks, so much, for all you do.

    -Shari

    Hi Abby!

I’m so thankful that I decided to check out Pinterest for white Ikea cabinets. There you were with your amazing kitchen and encouraging words. They give me hope that husband and I will be able to design and install our kitchen redo. I especially enjoyed reading about your cabinet hardware placement decision-making and installation. I will definitely bookmark your page and refer to it when we begin to plan.

And an aside, I love the song that you framed. Grace is pretty amazing.

    Thanks!
    Marsha

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thank you so much, Marsha! I’m so glad the posts were helpful! Best of luck with your kitchen renovation!

  55. Jacqueline Morris says:

I am in love with your kitchen and I am using it as inspiration for my kitchen. Your kitchen size and layout is exactly how mines looks. I was wondering about the cabinet on top of the fridge if you have a refrigerator box built to bring the cabinet out so you can use it, or does it sit way back like the rest of the cabinets. My cabinets are hard to reach and not very usable so I am trying to figure out what people do about it. Also, I love your counter tops. I love IKEA as well! Do you remember approx. the cost of the counter tops? I am trying to decide if I should go with granite or not. I tried to look online for prices and can’t find the quartz cost.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thanks so much, Jacqueline! We did not put a refrigerator box behind the cabinet to bring it out. It wasn’t the easiest to get to, but I kept things in there that I didn’t use very often, so it wasn’t really a big deal. As far as the quartz goes, we got ours through IKEA, and their pricing depends on which level you choose (they list their pricing on page 16 of this brochure: https://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/pdf/buying_guides_fy15/sektion/SEKTION-bg-ct.pdf ). I want to say that ours was $69 per foot, and that includes installation. I believe they have a 25 square foot minimum. I hope this helps! Best of luck with your kitchen!

    This is so beautiful !
I’m looking to redo my kitchen using the Grimslov cabinets. Yours look white, while the ones in the store are apparently off-white. What color do yours look in real life? And were they tagged as off white in the store?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Ours were off white (we have since moved and no longer live in this house), as they are marked in the store. If you look at the sink (which is actually white) next to the cabinet, you can see the color difference. It isn’t huge, and I was pleased with what the cabinet color ended up being. I hope this helps!

      ~Abby =)

  57. Jocey Lichtenstein says:

How are you finding the Grimslov paired with the Organic White Caesarstone? Do you still love it? Any staining? I am changing my mind as I was goinf to get dark grey Caesarstone but now want a lighter color. I Have the Grimslove cupboards, now looking at countertops and I found a backsplash and Organic White color countertop together that I love…

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Jocey! We actually don’t live in this house anymore, but we loved the cabinet/countertop combo until the day we moved out! (And the kitchen was one of the big things that helped sell the house, so the new owner really liked it too!) Best of luck with your kitchen updates!

      ~Abby =)

  58. Charmaine Warren says:

Hello! We are thinking of using IKEA for cabinets for a house we are building. How are they holding up? Have you had any issues with them?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Charmaine! We actually don’t live in this house anymore, but we were in the new kitchen for about 9 months before we moved out and had no complaints! The cabinets held up beautifully. (And I’m actually missing them now because the IKEA cabinets are 15 inches deep and the cabinets in our new house are the standard 12″ and seem so shallow!) I highly recommend them!

      ~Abby =)

  59. You guys are fantastic, we are in the kitchen & bath remodeling for years and I just found your blog randomly, excellent job.

  62. Which countertop did you use? Quartz Eggshell from Ikea?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Monique! We used Organic White, which we purchased through IKEA. When we went through them, they used Caesarstone brand quartz. I hope this helps!

  65. Jill Knight says:

Hello. What an extraordinary transformation. I used the link for the backsplash tile and just want to verify the exact one you used: Was it the dal tile brand in Carrara? Also, is that technically a glass tile or is it actually marble and did you have to seal it?

Thanks in advance for your time. I have been searching for just the right backsplash for over 4 months and have to decide now so I can put my kitchen back together.

  66. Vadara Quartz says:

    Hello Abby,

Great transformation, the before and after is really a distinct upgrade! I totally agree that there’s a huge difference between when you love the kitchen you’re in as opposed to cringing at how it looks. Clicking through, the upcycled kitchen sideboard went through a lot of phases (and paintjobs) and is a great accent to your kitchen. I didn’t even notice the crown molding added to the kitchen cabinets until you mentioned it and they look great. Once again, bravo!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Aw, thanks so much, Vadara! I appreciate you stopping by! Hope you’re having a wonderful week! <3

      ~Abby =)

  67. I’m still renting and being me by myself, but I do love decoration posts, even if until I would have time to do some major changes will be a few years,… But your kitchen is amazing. I love the fact that there is a lot of white, it makes everything look bigger.
I think is really pretty and cool.

    Have a nice weekend 🙂

Aw, thanks so much, Isolde! I appreciate your kind words. Have a wonderful weekend! <3

  68. Hello Abby i have just come across your stunning kitchen makeover and wondered if you no the name of the tile you have used please I’m really struggling to find a tile for our new home kitchen and what you have used is stunning!! We are in nz so who knows if it would be available x

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Summer! We used the 2″ Carrara White Hexagon Polished Mosaic Tile. Thanks!

  69. Darlene @ Castle Revival says:

I love your new house kitchen, but I just wanted to check out your previous one. You just kept making great improvements to it and the end result was so bright and inviting. I love how you increased the work space with that adorable table and chair combo. It really adds character to the space! Great talent, Abby!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Aw, thanks so much, Darlene! Hope you’re having a great start to 2018! <3

  70. Elizabeth S. says:

I know this is an old post, but I’m currently studying it obsessively because our apartment kitchen is almost exactly the same layout, down to the window on the right (with a radiator under it in our case). Did the counterspace give you enough room for food prep? Right now our sink is right in the middle so we have 2 teeny squares of countertop on either side, definitely going to try moving it over. Obviously your design is gorgeous and I’m taking notes. 🙂

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thank you so much, Elizabeth! Counter space was definitely limited in that kitchen, but bringing in the desk/sideboard under the window helped a lot, and it ended up being enough space for us. Best of luck with your project!

      ~Abby =)

  71. Hi Abby, love the remodel. I was wondering if you could tell me which pulls and knobs you used? I browsed over to D. Lawless hardware but they had such a large selection it was tough to identify the ones in the images.

    Thanks,

    1. Hi Leah,

Did you use a designer to design your Ikea kitchen? If so would you recommend?

      Thank you!

  72. I love your new kitchen!

My wife and I are in the same boat, and are having our IKEA installed. But we are tearing our hearts and soul out to find an appropriate backsplash. Something neutral, but not too subtle. We cannot for the sake of us decide on the backsplash, subway tile, glass tile, glass leaf tile, or some other type of mosaic. Mostly white or light gray.

What tile did you end up using for your backsplash?

By the way, nice job on sealing the 1 ft gap between the cabinet and ceiling.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi! Thanks so much. We LOVED our IKEA kitchen when we lived in our townhouse. I still miss it sometimes! 🙂 We wrote all about choosing our kitchen backsplash tile in this post: https://justagirlandherblog.com/choosing-kitchen-backsplash-tile/. You can see more about how we installed the hexagon marble backsplash that we chose in this post: https://justagirlandherblog.com/how-to-install-hexagon-marble-backsplash/. Hope these posts are helpful for you! Have a great weekend!

      ~Abby =)

  73. I realize you wrote this post years ago, but I’m hoping you’ll see this! I love your kitchen. We are about to start our Ikea kitchen reno. We have also picked the Grimslov off white cabinets, but when comparing the samples in store to the white counter tops, they were not the same shade of white. However, yours look like they match nicely. Are they the same white or different? My fiance really thinks we should do grey countertops, but there is just something about white counter tops. Thank you! 🙂

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Bailey! The GRIMSLOV cabinet fronts are very slightly off-white. In my photos if you look at the cabinets next to the sink, which is white white, you can see the difference. The Organic White countertops from Caesarstone that we used had several different “shades of white” in them, so they worked well for us and we loved the combination with the GRIMSLOV cabinets. If you’re looking for gray options, our current kitchen has Caesarstone London Grey counters, and we love those too. (You can see some detail shots of our current counters in this post: https://justagirlandherblog.com/installing-quartz-countertops/ .) I hope this helps! Best of luck with your reno!
