DIY Minimalist Makeup Organization Hack

This simple DIY minimalist makeup organization solution ended up being the perfect way to store all of my makeup supplies so that getting ready in the morning is a breeze!

Ever since we started our YouTube channel, Abby Organizes, one of the videos that we’ve gotten the most requests for is a video on makeup organization!

Now admittedly, this made me a little nervous.

I’ve never been a big makeup person; I don’t wear fancy makeup by any stretch of the imagination. And I also wasn’t using much of a system to organize my makeup. I just had it in a little makeup bag on a shelf in my closet.

I knew I could have a better system for makeup organization, though, so I decided to use this opportunity to create one!

Since I always sat on a stool to do my makeup in front of the full length mirror in our master closet, I thought it would be great if I could use the little bit of free wall space in this corner to create an organization system for my makeup.

My initial idea was to use a pegboard and rig some kind of little bins on it to hold my makeup supplies. But then I was at The Container Store and found some acrylic spice racks that just happened to be the right size to fit my space, and I knew they would be the perfect solution!

I used my Silhouette cutting machine to create some simple labels for the organizers (see how I do that in this post), and then Donnie helped me hang them up on the wall.

I ended up dividing my makeup into four groups: eyes, face, lips, and tools…

…and each group had its own shelf on my organizers. I also found some small acrylic containers to help me corral items within the spice rack organizers. (I used the ones that were 2 5/16″ square, in the 3 1/16″ height and the 5 1/16″ height.) Everything has its perfect little spot!

The top row holds my tools: brushes, foam wedges, q-tips, and cotton balls.

Below that, I have a spot for lip glosses and chapstick. (I’m not a big lipstick person– I told you I wasn’t fancy!)

The lower organizer holds items for my face– moisturizer, concealer, blush, foundation, etc.

And finally, the bottom row is for all things eyes– eyeliner, mascara, an eyelash curler, and eye shadow.

And that’s it! I typically try to keep two of each item, one that I’m currently using and a spare. I know that whenever I go down to one item, it’s time to buy a new spare!

I love that this system is super simple and flexible. If I ever decide to change up my makeup routine, I can switch around the containers and even add another spice rack or two if I need to! Right now it’s working perfectly as is, though, and it makes getting ready each day really easy.

  1. I Abby, I hope your week is starting well. I was thinking about some system to have my makeup organized (usually is just laying over my vanity, more or less looking like a mess), so I’ve been putting together some pretty boxes from all around my house that I had the intention of painting in navy blue, (my favorite color!) to put the products in. I loved the categories that you used for your products so I will use some similar now. Thank you! 🙂

I love that idea, Gaby! (I’m a big fan of navy blue too! 🙂 Have fun with your project!!

I use a black train case makeup thing (the kind with the accordian trays). It actually holds a lot. It works super well because you can fold it all up and tuck it away when your done. Also makes it super portable when you have to share a bathroom with other people. When I travel I put all the basics into a drawstring bag that I made at Girl Scout camp (like 12 years ago lol).

Sounds like you have a great system, Gabrielle! Thanks so much for sharing! <3

  3. Love it Abby I have to say you are sooo lucky to have boys. Whenever I try to organize my makeup, with 3 girls in the house, its gone!! I have to find a way to lock it up. HE HE! I am always searching for something no matter how organized I am..

    1. justagirlabby says:

That would certainly make it more challenging… sounds like a lock may be necessary! 🙂 Lol! Hope you’re having a great week, Amy!

  4. LOL. This post is so relevant to my life these days. I spent about 20 minutes pacing the make up isle at Target just wondering what in the world I was looking at. I needed eyeliner. There were lip pencils, brow pencils, concealer pencils. I JUST NEEDED EYE LINER! This is when minimalism pays off! I love these tips and ideas. My “shove them all into a bag” thing doesn’t work so hot.

I am SO similar, Renee! There are WAY too many options… it’s overwhelming! Lol! I’m glad this was helpful for you. Have a great Wednesday! <3

When I was three years old my parents bought me a small chest with attached mirror that resembles what geisha girls would use in Japan ( yes, we lived on Okinawa at the time) and to begin with I used it mainly for paperdolls and their outfits, but when I got older I used it to store my makeup items. One deep drawer houses my lipsticks and the other drawer houses brushes, blushes, etc. I rarely wear makeup now, but it is nice to have on hand anyway. LOL

That’s so awesome to have a piece like that! I’m sure it’s beautiful! Have a great week, Vicki!

  7. That is so cute! I had to laugh because your “before” makeup storage looks exactly like mine. I have one little bag and one extra bag which actually has more hair stuff in it than makeup. haha 🙂

    1. justagirlabby says:

Lol! The makeup bag system works well if you do your makeup on the go a lot! I just wanted a more permanent solution for this space. 🙂 Hope you had a great weekend, Deanna!

      ~Abby =)

  8. I have heaps of old makeup lying around in the “one more use” pile. But this makes me want to get organized. I love the idea and the acrylic shelves too. Thanks for the inspiration!

So glad it was helpful, Jessica! Have a great weekend!

  9. I keep makeup in a medium size fishing tackle box from Lowe’s. It has one life out tray n two small snap areas on the top. We r retired n travel, n this just fits in my carry on, so everything stays right side up. Eye shadow n lipsticks just fit in lift off tray, everything else goes in bottom. The bottom is deep enough for powder jars. I can see everything at a glance n it’s easy to clean. It lives in a cabinet until time to travel, then snap the lid n I’m off.

That sounds like a great system! Thanks so much for sharing!
