I admit, I always get a little nervous about decorating the outside of our home. We didn’t really have much exterior to decorate at our townhouse, so other than throwing a wreath on the door, I never did much outdoor decorating until we moved here a few years ago.

I am slowly getting the hang of it, though, and it gets a little easier each and every season. When I began decorating our porch for Christmas, one of the first things I did was figure out how to put a cute garland around the door.

I ended up using little white screw-in hooks like these, putting one at the top center of the door frame and then four down each side. I then took two pieces of 20 gauge floral wire and attached the garland at each hook. For once, it was a project that was easier than I expected! 🙂

The wreaths on the windows were a new addition to our Christmas outdoor decor this year. (I used 24″ wreaths that I found at Hobby Lobby.) Again, I was nervous about hanging them, but it didn’t end up being difficult! I wrote out the simple tutorial in this post.

We live on a hill, so it can get pretty windy, but our wreaths are still firmly in place!

Once I figured out the logistics of hanging our items, all that was left to do was to add some pretty things… like pillows and lanterns and blankets and such. 🙂

I like that our porch is big enough for a little seating area and a bit of decor, but it is also small enough that it is not overwhelming to decorate, which I appreciate as a novice outdoor decorator!

Even though I am a warm weather girl, I had kind of been hoping for a little bit of snow so I could get a shot of the house in all of its winter glory. I had just about given up hope, but then I woke up yesterday, and we had gotten a little dusting, so I grabbed my camera and ran outside!

I actually almost broke the camera too, because I didn’t realize that our driveway was a sheet of ice and I nearly slipped! Eeek! As you can tell by my ribbons going every which way, it was pretty windy, but I was still glad to be able to get a snowy photo. 🙂

  3. Looks wonderful. You did a great job! Your porch is fabulous, but with 2 outside dogs at our house, all of that would be strewn everywhere the day after I did it…or less time. Lol!

I’m sure the dogs definitely make decorating more of a challenge! 🙂 Thanks for popping over, Karen! Have a great weekend!

  6. I love your idea for hanging the wreaths! I also live somewhere where it can be rather windy at times, and decided to not hang wreaths for the fear of them blowing off the window. But I may have to try this! Did they hold up well that day you took the picture in the wind?

    1. justagirlabby says:

They did! We’ve had a few windy days and they’re still going strong! 🙂
