Plans for the Primary Bedroom

I may have a teensy problem with leaving rooms alone in our house. I put them together thinking I love everything that’s in them, I’m thrilled with how they turn out and then… I live in them. And as I live in them, I start to notice things that I should have done differently. Or my style changes ever so slightly and the things I thought I loved just seem kind of “meh.” Do you ever have that problem? I think it’s an occupational hazard when you’re a creative, so I’ve just started trying to embrace it! 🙂

The very first full “room makeover” I did on Just a Girl and Her Blog was for our master bedroom, and I was so excited about it. I switched up the bedding, bought new lamps, made some curtains and accessories, and painted a trunk and a wall. It wasn’t a complete overhaul, but it was an improvement over what it was previously.

Though there are many things I still like and plan to keep, some things just have to go… like that really dark accent wall, for example. Do you know why I painted it dark brown? Because I had bought the paint for something else, decided not to use it for the original project, and felt like I had to use it for something. Worst reason ever to pick a paint color!

All of the other walls in our room are painted a dark-ish tan. When we moved in we painted almost the entire house that color, and we have been going room by room and painting over it since last June. This is the LAST room that needs to be rid of it, and it will be happening soon! Woohoo!

See that headboard? Oh wait, you can’t see it because it’s black and the wall is dark brown… not that it’s bugging me or anything. 😉 Trust me when I say that it is big, heavy, and chunky. It came with the house when we bought it, and after 6 years, it’s time for a change.

So enough about the old– let’s talk about the new! Want to see the full plan?

Curtains | Glass Box | Headboard | Bedding | 2 Pillows | Pillow | Paint | Orb | Throw | Sheets | Rug | Lamp | Shade | Mirror

When I was thinking about how I wanted this room to feel, the words that kept coming to mind were “elegant” and “cozy.” Not two things you always see together, but I think we can make it work.  And since I’m the cheapest person alive, I’m always trying to keep things affordable too!

One of the ways we’re keeping costs down is by not replacing every single thing. The main items we’re keeping are the rug, the mirror, and the lamps. We also already own the throw (which was given to me by some sweet bloggy friends right after I had my surgery <3), and we’re keeping our dressers (not pictured), which got their own makeovers here and here.

I’m changing up the bedding by adding a Crane & Canopy duvet and shams that I’ve been swooning over for a while as well as some new sheets and toss pillows. The floral pillow is setting the tone for the colors of the room, which I’m picturing as mostly neutral with a few small pops of color.

We are planning on making the headboard ourselves (and by “we” I of course mean that Donnie will probably do most of it while I supervise…). And along with painting the walls in Behr Marquee’s Silver City (which we also used in our master bathroom), we are going to attempt a pretty board and batten-esque wall treatment behind the bed. I think. As long as I can convince Donnie that it NEEDS to happen. 😉

I think that about covers it! I’m excited for this little refresh of our space, and if all goes well, I will be popping in each week with updates, so stay tuned! Have you made any changes in your master lately? Tell me about them in the comments! Have a great day!

  1. I can’t wait to see the finished product! I’m like you, constantly tweaking things and figuring out what I want to do differently! Decorating is just so much fun!

I like your plans a lot! Love the accents of blue you added. I think you are right in going lighter and brighter. We are just getting to our master bedroom. We have painted, redone, up cycled, revamped every room in our home. But our bedroom. Even the floor trim is still the faux wood color. I am slowly getting it all done. It is hard to devote time to this space because even though it is my bedroom. I NEVER am in there. With three small kids the main living area is the most used space. So that was first priority. I am finally able to look to my bedroom and begin. I can’t wait to see the progress in your room!

  3. I absolutely adore that rug! And love your mood board. My husband and I are complete opposites when it comes to decorating…he likes darker, old-style colors and I like an updated, light, fresh look. Any suggestions 🙂

Ooh that’s a toughie. I pretty much get to call the shots when it comes to decorating at our house (though Donnie has a great eye, so I often ask for his opinion), but I do try to make “his” spaces more masculine. In our bedroom, for example, his dresser area fits in with the rest of the room, but it definitely has a more “manly” look than my gold and white dresser with flowers and jewelry sitting on top. I say give him a little corner and convince him to let you do your thing with the rest! 😉 Donnie is always hesitant about my ideas at first, but he is usually glad he listened to me when they’re finished!

Hi, Abby! I love your plans for your master bedroom and the way it looks now! I’d love to paint a dark feature wall in my home’s master bedroom (the walls are now a light green) — but my husband hates feature walls and is not too fond of color. 🙁

  5. LOVE the blue!! I’ve always done a blue theme in my room as well. Great post!
