My Favorite Space: A Beachy Coastal Family Room by Making Home Base

A Beachy Coastal Family Room | Making Home Base for Just a Girl and Her Blog

Well, it’s hard to believe we’ve already come to the end of the My Favorite Space series! I can’t think of a better way to complete the collection of gorgeous spaces that have been shared this summer than with a beautiful family room from my sweet friend Chelsea of Making Home Base! Here she is!

Hey there readers! I’m Chelsea from Making Home Base. I blog about life as a serial renter (my husband is in the military so we move a lot) and the fun challenges that brings. We just recently moved from California to Florida; which makes our sixth cross country move. I’m so thrilled to be sharing with you my favorite space. It also happens to be pretty much the only presentable space in our home since the big move – our family room.

What is the main function of the space?

Our family room is the heartbeat of our home. This is where we most often gather. On any given day you’ll see my daughter playing on the floor with legos, my husband with his feet up watching the game, and me curled up on the sofa with a magazine. We also use this space to play games as a family or watch movies together. We really do life in this space. There’s no dedicated play space in our home so our family room serves as the tv room, the sitting room, the playroom, you name it. I always want my kiddo to feel comfortable playing legos on the floor or puzzles on the coffee table. At the same time, I don’t want the toys taking over. This cubby helps manage the toy clutter and gives many of the toys a home.

Can you tell us about some of the fun DIY elements in the space?

Oh yeah!

One big DIY that gets lots of attention is the oversized wall art above my sofa. They were created by simply painting three custom sized pieces of plywood with metallic gold paint.

Another DIY in this space is the oversized chalkboard. Evidently I have a thing for oversized wall hangings 🙂

Do you have any funny/happy/sweet/interesting stories about this space?

Hmm, I don’t know that we’ve been here long enough for me to share anything too interesting. I will comment a bit on the white sofa, though. When we (and really it was just me) took the plunge to switch to a white slipcovered sofa, everyone told me to invest in bleach. I kept thinking anything is better than what I had previously! We had a brown sectional, while comfy and spacious, it showed every single yogurt smear you could imagine. I wrote about my brown sofa woes here. Having a white sofa really makes me giggle. I wash it about once ever ten days/two weeks (with bleach) but it never fails that the day I wash it is the day my kid comes running through with sticky peanut butter hands or my dog jumps on it after just digging in the dirt. My favorite though is after my recent trip to Atlanta, I came home to a strategically placed pillow on the sofa, and a big ol’ chocolate milk spill underneath it. Welcome home, mom!! I wouldn’t have it any other way 🙂

What is it about the space that makes it your favorite?

Not only is it the first space that I can truly say reflects my style, it’s just the place where my people are. I always say that decorating a rental seems like loads of work for almost no pay off, especially when you are moving so often. But really, you are decorating a space for your family to enjoy and that is meaningful no matter how long you are in a place.

How would you describe your design style, and which elements in the room help bring that to life?

I’ve always loved home decor and DIY but I don’t think I could ever say my home has had a style or even looked a tiny bit cohesive until recently. I’m one of those gals that just really loves so many different styles and it makes settling on one really difficult. When we moved into this house things finally started coming together.

My favorite Space-3

After the white slipcover, I felt like my style really began to develop. Seriously, you guys! All thanks to a white sofa. This space started leaning towards beachy coastal and I embraced it by bringing these woven chairs and my rattan coffee table.

And then there’s this sideboard. My very favorite piece of furniture in our whole house, ahhh… that wood.
