A few weeks ago when I talked about my new gallery wall, I revealed that decorating is actually kinda hard for me. My overly analytical, type-A brain starts going crazy when I can literally do anything I want with a space, so unless I set some guidelines for myself, I’ll just put off making a decision forever and ever and nothing would get finished. I was having this exact problem, in fact, when I went to pick out throw pillows for my couch. “They’re just pillows, right?” I thought to myself, “How hard can it be?”

Ha. Then I popped over to Wayfair to browse and saw hundreds upon hundreds of pretty pillows to choose from, and I knew I was in trouble. How would I ever make a decision?! So I did what I usually do when I run into this problem… I studied. I looked all over Pinterest, I perused my latest stack of catalogs and magazines, I hopped around to a bunch of different blogs, searching and searching for pillow combinations that caught my eye. And when all was said and done, I came away with 3 “recipes” for mixing and matching pillows that I really loved. Let’s check them out!

The One with the Same Color Scheme

Eir Cotton Pillow | Lviv Cotton Pillow | Dolbeau Cotton Pillow

I think because my natural inclination is to go matchy-matchy, this type of pillow combination caught my eye right away. It matches, but with a fun twist! In this “recipe,” you pick two colors and select pillows within that color scheme but with patterns that vary. In this mixture, like the others I’ll show you below, I tried to change up the scale of the patterns– the houndstooth pattern in the middle is very small, the chevron pattern on the left is very large, and the damask-ish print on the right is somewhere in the middle. I just loved the look of the same color/different pattern pillows all lined up on a couch. It definitely made a statement!

The One with the Lead Pattern

Ailsa Stripes Pillow | Heloise Floral Pillow | Solid Decorative Pillow

Another pillow combination that caught my eye when I was studying up a storm was one where the decorator would choose a lead fabric and coordinate the colors of other pillows to match. In this case, I started with the center floral pillow as my lead and chose the outer pillows based on that yellow/aqua/gray combination. The lead pillow pulls everything together for a nice, polished look.

The One with Brights and Whites

Faustine Cotton Pillow | Fergano Throw Pillow | Jiri Cotton Pillow

The final combo that I found myself drawn to over and over was one where all the pillows had a white background with a brightly colored pattern as the overlay. Again as you can see in my example, the scales of the patterns vary– the triangles are small, the dots are medium, and the ikat is larger– but the colors coordinate and make for a very cheery, happy space, especially when used in combination with fun accessories!

Now these certainly aren’t the only three ways you could do it– there are tons of methods out there, I’m sure– but keeping these ideas in mind when I was looking through allllllll the gorgeous pillows definitely helped me to narrow down my options and ultimately come to a final decision. And speaking of that final decision… can you guess which combo I chose? Take a look!

The bright and cheery one, of course! I was looking for ways to incorporate more color into our main living space, and these pillows were the perfect touch! All of the fun colors bring a smile to my face every time I walk into the room.

  6. you sound like me…I’ve been stressing over changing my throw pillows for my brown leather couch for weeks! It’s funny how you can obsess over something so small. I’ve bought several and taken them back and I keep second guessing myself. How many pillows did you end up with on one sofa?

    1. justagirlabby says:

It changes by season! Sometimes I’ll just have two, other times, up to 6. Depends on my mood…lol! Have a wonderful day, Shannon!
