First Things First: Choosing Mattresses

Over the past few months as we’ve been packing up our house and moving, our family has slept in a bunch of different places. On camping mattresses on the floor of the townhouse. At our parents’ houses. At my sister’s house. In multiple hotels. In a temporary apartment. Lots and lots of places.

This post has so many helpful tips for making the moving process easier! She talks about the best ways to pack up boxes, store everything, and get prepared to move into the new house. Click through to the post to read more!

Our sweet boys, sleeping on camp mattresses on the floor of the townhouse right before we moved out 🙂

One of the many reasons we were so excited to get to the new house is to finally be able to sleep in our own beds again– it had been a while!

So one of the first things I knew I needed to figure out when I was planning for the new house was cozy mattresses for everyone. The mattress from our old master bedroom was going to be used in the guest room in the new house, so Donnie and I were mattress-less. And when we decided that we were going to do side-by-side beds rather than bunk beds for the boys, I gave away their beds and mattresses as a set, so they were without mattresses as well.

I began researching. The last time I bought a mattress for my room, I had just graduated from college and was moving into my first apartment (I will just let you guess at how long ago that was…?), so I had been out of the mattress loop for a bit. Did I want pillow top? Memory foam? How did I know that it would be comfortable? And would I have to strap it to the top of my car to get it home? Eeek. That seemed intimidating.

Love this beautiful bed and cozy mattress! And that light fixture-- swoon!

But after reading about mattress after mattress after mattress, I finally decided on one that seemed like it would be perfect. I was able to have it shipped to my house (WIN!), and when I posted this photo on Instagram of Caleb trying out the mattress with our new bed, I got a lot of questions about it, so I thought I’d do a quick post about what we chose and why we chose it.

Tuft & Needle Mattress: A Review

Great review of Tuft and Needle mattresses. Definitely keeping them in mind when I buy my next mattress!

A huge thanks to Tuft & Needle for providing a king sized mattress for this post. My favorable opinion of cozy mattresses that allow me to sleep like a baby are 100% my own. For more information, see my disclosures here.

We ended up going with a king sized mattress from Tuft & Needle. I was looking for a mattress that would be super supportive as well as comfortable, and their unique Adaptive Foam is just that. It’s different than a true memory foam in that it supports your natural posture without sinking in too much and leaving an impression in the mattress over time. It is also more breathable, so you don’t sleep hot, which is a frequent complaint with many traditional memory foam mattresses.

The mattress arrived at our house in a box, so it was easy to carry it up the stairs without any awkward and extensive maneuvering.

Now I admit, when we pulled the mattress out of the box and unrolled it, I was a bit skeptical…

Was this really going to become a mattress that was thick and cozy enough for me to sleep on?! But within seconds of taking off the plastic wrapper, the mattress puffed up to its normal size and was ready for sleeping!

Donnie tested it out right away. I think he approves. 🙂

Also, if you get a new mattress and you don’t take a selfie on it, did it even really happen? Doubtful. 😉

ANYWAY…

The versatility of the Tuft & Needle mattresses is also nice. We slept on it directly on the floor for a few weeks while we waited for our bed to come in, and it was very comfortable. The type of bed we ended up choosing required box springs, so we are using them, but they are not necessary for the T & N mattresses.

As far as firmness of the mattress goes, I would borrow the words of Goldilocks when I say it’s not too soft, not too firm, but just right. 🙂 Tuft & Needle’s FAQs describe the mattress firmness as “about a 5 or 6 on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being a feather pillow and 10 a hardwood floor” and I would say that description is definitely accurate.

Tuft & Needle gives a 10 year warranty on their mattresses, AND they even let you have a 100 night trial, so there’s no risk involved. We definitely didn’t need 100 nights to decide, though, because we have definitely been sleeping much better since our mattress arrived– it’s a keeper! Now I just need to decide on bedding… ?

Because we loved how comfortable our mattress was (and because they were so affordable!), we also ended up purchasing twin Tuft & Needle mattresses for the Cs, and they have been loving them too! Their room is going to be the first one that I’ll fully decorate, and I’ll be sharing more info about it on Thursday, so be sure to pop back in for that!

My husband and I bought one like this too, although not from this store. As soon as we took it out of the box I told him absolutely not! But once it grew to it’s normal size I was in love! This type of mattress is the way to go!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Totally agree, Hayden! We are LOVING it!

I’ve been reading about this company like crazy! It seems like one of the biggest draws to this brand is how it’s delivered. VERY appealing! I drive a big SUV, but even getting my daughter’s new twin mattress home recently was a hassle! Your home is coming together beautifully already! I love all of these “First Things First” posts.

Aw, thanks so much, Erica! It is a work in progress, but loving it so far! How the mattress is delivered is a definite perk and the mattress has been awesome so far! Hope you’re having a great week!

  6. Love this post! I’ve had the same mattress for quite a long time as well! Once we have the money, which will probably be after the wedding some time, we’re hoping to look into a new one! My fiance prefers the mattress as soft as a memory foam, but I find myself preferring more firm mattresses. So it seems as if this one may be a great one to look into for the future! I can’t stand the all around memory foam mattresses. They make me feel as if I sinking all the way through and I can’t sleep comfortably that way-it’s just not the way to go! Anyways, thanks again for sharing! 🙂

So glad it was helpful for you, Ashley! And congrats on your upcoming wedding! 🙂

  7. OH MY GOODNESS! I finally took a look at their website after finishing a read through of your blog post. I was expecting the price to be WAY MORE than what they have stated. I will DEFINITELY be putting your suggestion into consideration! *pins for later on Pinterest* 😀

  8. MomofTwoPreciousGirls says:

I second Abby’s opinion! We bought a full size tuft & needle mattress for our daughter and is the most comfortable bed in our house (even better than our sleep number). The price was so reasonable and it’s been over a year and there is no wear spots at all.

  9. Lauryn White says:

I have the EXACT same bed! You are going to LOVE it! Thanks for your awesome blog!

    1. justagirlabby says:

We are definitely loving it so far! Thanks so much, Lauryn! Have a fabulous evening!

  10. Last night was my first night on my new Tuft &Needle mattress. When I first unboxed it and laid on it, it felt comfortable. However, it seemed too firm after putting on the mattress protector and sheets. Needless to say, I tossed and turned last night. I suppose it’s my body not used to the new surface. How was your first night? Were you immediately pleased with the mattress or did it take a couple of days to get used to it? Thanks!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hm. I have read that the Tuft & Needle mattresses are slightly firmer than some of the other memory foam-ish mattresses that can be delivered to your house, but ours has always felt comfortable to me and I haven’t had issues. They have a really responsive customer service team, so you could definitely reach out to them if you feel like something is wrong with your mattress! I hope it gets better for you!

  11. After lengthy monotonous research, we pulled the trigger last night. Stay tune for it’s arrival and review.
