DIY Cake Stand Organizer

Gold Cake Stand Organizer by Just a Girl and Her Blog

I love the gold trend that is going on right now–so chic and classy! I had yet to integrate much gold into my home, but when Kelly from View Along the Way and her fellow bloggers issued their “Ditto DIY” challenge, it gave me the perfect opportunity to add some shimmer and shine to our space.

The challenge was this: “Gild something or paint it gold, then use it in a lovely display.” Not only did this challenge give me the perfect excuse to get in on the gold trend, it also gave me a reason to take on a Pinterest project I’ve been wanting to try–the DIY cake stand.

Goal #1: Make the Cake Stand
Plate and Candlestick Before

I used a dollar store candlestick I had from a previous crafting endeavor {which clearly didn’t work out} and a 79 cent plate from Michael’s to complete this project. {I will never deny the fact that I am about as cheap as they come!}

Since both surfaces were relatively “slippery,” I gave them each a coat of spray paint primer. Apparently we only had the gray primer around. I didn’t even know that existed, but whatever…it worked!

Plate and Candlestick Primed

I gave them a few thin coats of gold spray paint, hot glued them together, and they were ready to go! Now on to the next part of my mission: create a lovely display.

Goal #2: Style That Thing!

I used a gorgeous mirror I got on clearance at Michael’s for $10 {Yes, you read that right. I couldn’t believe it either.} as my back drop and since jewelry is also gold and glittery and fun, I decided that it would be the perfect addition to my shiny new tray, along with some other pretty accessories.

This is the type of project I love–simple process, BIG transformation! I’m so glad this challenge finally gave me the push I needed to bust out my gold spray paint and go to town. I still have some left, too, so let’s just say that nothing in my house is safe… 😉
