Back to School: Personalized Clipboards

Back to School: Personalized Clipboards by Just a GIrl and Her Blog

Can you believe back-to-school time is fast approaching?! I feel like summer is absolutely flying by. We are starting to get the back-to-school mail from my son’s preschool, are getting started on shopping for clothes and supplies, and of course, we’re making some back-to-school crafts too! What could be cuter than these little personalized clipboards for your favorite teacher or students? These were so simple to make, and the decorating possibilities are endless. Here’s what you’ll need to do for this project:

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

You will need (list includes affiliate links):

  • Clipboards
  • Scrapbook Paper (2 sheets/clipboard)
  • Mod Podge (I used the matte finish.) and a Sponge Brush
  • Name Tags (I made mine in PicMonkey, but you could use stickers, cutouts from a magazine, etc.)
  • Ribbon, Washi Tape, or whatever else you want to use to decorate your boards
  • Scissors
  • Ruler

Step 2: Trace the Clipboard

Start by tracing around you clipboard on the back side of your scrapbook paper to ensure a perfect fit.

Step 3: Cut It Out!

Cut right inside of the outline you just created so that your paper doesn’t hang over the edge of the board. You’ll also want to cut straight across the line where the purchasing information is on your scrapbook paper (if applicable).

Step 4: Measure & Cut Again

This is where it becomes art! I wanted two patterns on each side of my clipboard, so I cut up my sheets. I measured 8″ down from the top of my piece of paper, drew a line across, and cut on the line.

Step 5: Mod Podge!

Now that your paper is all measured out and ready to go, it’s time to mod podge. Spread a thin coat of mod podge all over one side of your clipboard.

Step 6: Decorate!!

Working quickly, carefully place your paper and decorative pieces down on the mod podge, smoothing any creases that form in the paper. Warning for type-A personalities like myself: it probably will not be perfect. And your sweet little student will probably not even notice. They will just love you tons and tons because you made this cute project for them. 😀

Step 7: Mod Podge Again

Once all of your decorative pieces are in place, you’ll want to mod podge over everything again, giving the paper and tape a protective coating.

Allow the first side of your board to dry completely, then repeat steps 5-7 on the other side of your clipboard.

Step 8 (optional): Add Ribbon

I decided to add ribbon to the girls’ clipboards to make them a little extra-special. If your boy loves ribbon too, go for it!

Step 9: Admire Your Work!

Was that the easiest project ever or what?! I love that these are so customizable and can be made to fit each kid’s interests and personality. These would make great party favors, teacher gifts, or even just a nice little back-to-school surprise. And you can’t beat the cost–$1 per clipboard and about $1 in scrapbook paper for each board + supplies and decorative items from around your home = a sweet gift for only $2!

Have you started on any back-to-school projects yet?

I LOVE this! I especially like that you used PicMonkey for the name labels. I don’t have a fancy die cut machine and am always looking for ideas for labels. Thanks for sharing this. I’m visiting from the It’s Overflowing link party.

  4. Abby, when doing a project like this, use a straight/safety pin to gently poke holes in the bubbles and they should smooth down nicely.
