It has become a bit of a tradition around here to change out our shelf decor with each season. It’s always a fun challenge for me to try to come up with something different than I’ve done previously, and it’s nice to have a change of scenery in our main living space, too. (Especially since I didn’t entirely take down our Christmas shelf decor until… oh, the end of February…)

After all of the snow and gloomy weather we’ve had here in Pennsylvania lately, I was absolutely craving bright and cheery colors, so that’s what I used as my starting point for this year’s spring shelf decor.

Originally I had the idea to make a really cool flowered-wreath-letter-hanging-thing to act as the main focal point for the top shelf, so I did. And it looked hideous. Seriously, it was a total and utter #craftfail. At first I was sad that the beautiful centerpiece I had imagined wasn’t going to come to fruition, but my sadness quickly turned to glee when I found these gorgeous prints on Etsy and I liked them a thousand times better. Crisis averted! 🙂

The prints say, “We love because He first loved us” and “Let all that you do be done in love.” Not only are they pretty, but they’re encouraging too, and help us get in the right mindset for the Easter season!

After I had the main focal point squared away, I started my normal shelf decorating process. I first collected items I had around my house that I thought might fit the look I was going for. I set them on the shelves and left them there for a few days, rearranging them from time to time.  Then while I was out and about, I picked up a few spring-like items to fill in the gaps, again bringing them home, putting them on the shelves, and moving them around about a hundred times. Eventually I find an arrangement I like (or I just get sick of moving stuff around), and the final product is born!  {SUCH a scientific process, right?! 😉 }

Wanna know a secret? As much as I love decorating this space, I always dread photographing it. The light is kind of weird, and there always seem to be strange shadows and dark spots in the pictures. Photography has always been one of those things that I struggled with anyway, so add in less-than-ideal conditions, and it was a challenge to say the least!

I was getting frustrated because I felt like I spent so much time on this and other projects only to have the pictures turn out less-than-stellar, so I decided to do something about it and take another photography class. I’ve taken some really good ones in the past, but they were more general and this time I wanted one that was geared toward bloggers.

After doing my research, I discovered and decided to enroll in Food Photography School, a 130+ video course taught by the oh-so-sweet Miss Dana from Minimalist Baker. No, I’m not a food blogger {Be thankful for that! 😉 }, but I really did feel like the concepts and topics covered in the class were very applicable to my home/decor crafting projects as well and I learned so, so much.

So this time, instead of being scared to take the pictures of this space, I was able to come in with a whole new perspective, some new tricks up my sleeve, and a lot more confidence. And while I still have a long way to go when it comes to photography, I certainly feel like I’m headed in the right direction.

PS… Would you believe that little chalkboard was a Dollar Spot find? I just added the wreath embellishment with some vinyl I cut with my Silhouette, and it’s like a custom piece of art!

My spring decorating must be working because it is finally starting to warm up here in Pittsburgh! (Knock on wood…) Bye-bye snow and cold, hello flowers and sunshine! Yippee!
