Our Spring Living Room

If you’re new to the blog, we recently moved from a little townhouse into our current home, which we built through a community builder. (It’s a Palermo by Ryan Homes.) We’ve been working hard on projects all around the house, but most spaces– our living room included– are still a work in progress! Here’s what the it looked like when we moved in:

And here’s what it looks like now…

This area felt big, blank, and open when we first moved in, so one of our first projects was to create an entertainment unit to help ground the space and give it some interest. We used pieces from the IKEA BESTA system to create the size and shape we wanted and then added our own trim work to give it a more custom built-in look. (You can get the tutorial here.)

I couldn’t wait to fill up all of that shelf space! I use a ton of aqua in my decorating in general, but it really comes out in full force in the spring– I think nearly every aqua decor item I own is on those shelves at the moment! 🙂

Along with bringing out allllll the aqua things, I also tend to load up on greenery for spring. Okay, so in my case it is mostly faux greenery (hello, black thumb!), but it is a super simple way to add a touch of spring and some extra color and texture as well.

The tray on the coffee table was one of the little treasures I brought back from Donnie and my recent anniversary trip to Magnolia Market! I haven’t had a chance to write up a blog post about our trip yet, but I think I may have to– it was a fun one!

If you have a really good eye, you may have noticed that our couches are looking a little different these days. I’ve had tan covers on them since we moved in, but they were in need of a good cleaning, so I took them off to wash them (and found about a zillion missing legos in the cushions!) and put on the white ones. I forgot how crisp and clean the white looks– love!

Pillows are another easy way to change up decor seasonally, and I may or may not have a slight throw pillow obsession. It has gotten to the point that I can no longer buy them if my son Connor (age 8) is around, because he will go and report me to Donnie, who thinks I have way too many. Little tattletale. 😉

The arched window above the love seat was another Magnolia find, and I found the frames on either side at Michael’s. My trick for simple and super cheap art: many of the frames in my house are filled with scrapbook paper or wrapping paper! It makes it so easy to change them out seasonally or whenever I decide to go in a different direction with our decor (which is way more often than I would like to admit)!

My boys are still a little bit perplexed by door leaning up against the wall. Ever since I painted it and propped it up there a few months ago, they keep asking, “But where does it go?” 🙂 I love that it adds a pop of color, especially since we haven’t painted the walls yet. (This big open space feels so intimidating when it comes to painting. I know I will just have to bite the bullet and do it one of these days!)

The pink tulips are actually real. Let’s see how long I can make them last!

Finally, I’ll leave you with a little sneak peek of an upcoming project we’ll be sharing! None of the windows in our house were trimmed out when we moved in, so Donnie has been working on adding craftsman style window trim. We’ll have the tutorial for it soon!

  6. Some things have kept me away from blog reading lately. Now I have play catch up and what a great place to start. I love everything about your room, especially the aqua door :-). The pillow obsession? Not a bad one to have as you could have some way more expensive ones…..antiques, expensive jewelry, etc. Pillows aren’t so bad, haha.
