New House Update: We’re Getting Close!

GUYS!!! I feel like it’s been so long since I’ve done an update on the new house, so I thought I’d pop in today and do just that!

If you’re new around here, we recently sold the little townhouse that we’d lived in for 7 years and are in the process of building a new house just a few miles down the road. We are building with a community builder, Ryan Homes (the Palermo model), rather than a completely custom home, so we will have a blank slate to make our own once we move in! Currently we’re living in a tiny apartment while we’re waiting for the new house to be finished, which should be in the next 2 weeks! Woohoo!

(I talked more about our decision to move and build in this post, gave a preview of what the house will look like in this post, and shared a building update in this post shortly after we broke ground if you’d like to get caught up. I also share a bunch of update photos over on Instagram. 🙂 )

So what’s going on with the house right now?

For me, the building process has felt like it is going super fast and super slowly all at the same time. On one hand, I have been amazed at how quickly we’ve gone from an empty lot to an almost completed house. It’s kind of crazy.

On the other hand, I am not the most patient person in the universe, so sometimes during this period of transition it has felt like life has been moving in slow motion as we wait for the next chapter to start.

I thought the easiest way to give you an idea of what has been going on would be to do a little play by play of how the building process has progressed since my last update at the beginning of July (seriously, why has it taken me so long to update?!):

[July 4th] We drove by the house on our way out of town to see family and were thrilled to see that our house had walls! It was finally starting to look like an actual house!

We peeked inside and were able to see that most of the downstairs had been framed in, and we could tell where each room was going to be.

I’m standing at the entrance to the garage taking this photo. The smaller room to the left will become Donnie’s office, and the room to the right will be our living room.

[July 7th] We came back from our trip, and the rest of the house had been framed in! We couldn’t believe how fast it was happening!

The photo above was taken from the front door opening. We’re looking at a hallway straight ahead, with a bathroom and a mudroom off to the left. The structure on the right side of the photo would become the stairs.

[August 2nd] We got busy with packing up the townhouse and went on vacation to California for a week. When we got back, they had started on the siding!

[August 3rd] By the next day, the siding and shake were finished…

We were able to go inside, and they had finished the drywall while we were away as well!

I’m standing in the kitchen taking this photo, which is of the living room. That doorway leads to Donnie’s office.

[August 9th] I flew off to the Haven conference in Atlanta, Georgia, and when I got back, they had finished the stonework on the front of the house and installed the craftsman-style columns.

[August 12th] We met with our project manager and were able to take a look inside. They had painted! They paint everything a flat white to start out with, so we will go through and paint room by room once we move in. They had also done some of the trim work.

This is another shot of the living room, painted and with baseboards and trim installed.

The kitchen had been installed at this point as well! We went with white cabinets because we loved them so much in our townhouse, but we weren’t in love with any of the countertop choices that Ryan Homes offered, so we just had them put in whatever came with the house, and we will replace them soon after we move in (and hopefully donate these ones since they will be in great shape)! Again, we loved the Caesarstone quartz countertops in our last kitchen, so we are planning on using those again this time around.

I always have organization on the brain, so I was thrilled to see these slide out shelves built into some of the kitchen cabinets!

And the pantry was almost ready to go as well. My head was already spinning with organization ideas!!!

Right off the kitchen is the morning room, which has the best view of the surrounding hills and farmland. I have a feeling we’ll be spending a lot of time in here!

[August 18th] I wanted to take some measurements so I could start making some furniture decisions, so our sales manager let us into the house to look around.

The stair railings had been stained, and they had hung the fixture in the dining room, though we’ll probably change it out eventually. I love how much natural light there is in this space!

Every time we visit the house, Donnie heads to check out the progress in his office, and I can’t blame him! His office in the townhouse was an 8′ x 8′ space in the unfinished basement that had spiders and was freezing all the time. 🙂

When we’re entering the house from the garage, we will come in through this small mudroom. I think that nook is just begging for some built-ins, right?! There is a closet on the opposite side of the mudroom. I think when I have my big camera with me I’ll be able to get a better shot of the overall mudroom space.

This will be the downstairs powder room. It’s sort of odd, but it is right in the front of the house and there is a window that looks out onto the front porch. I think getting a nice thick blind for that window will be one of my first priorities! 🙂

They were working on the floors upstairs when we were there, so I wasn’t able to get many photos. I did sneak this one, though, which is the room I think will become the boys’ shared room.

[August 26th] We drove by at night and saw that they had left the lights on– so pretty!

They had also finished up the driveway, added the last set of shutters to the porch window, put in the porch steps, and were almost finished with the sidewalk at this point.

So that’s where we are with the house! It’s hard to believe everything will be finished and we will be moving in in just a few weeks, but we can’t wait!

Thanks for following along with us on our crazy moving journey this summer!

  12. Oh my gosh how fun! I had a dream about your house last night (I think I watched your IG story right before falling asleep-ha!). And the Poang chair is THE BEST. My husband is doing an intensive 2 year Bible study and all he wanted was a place to study so I grabbed him this chair with the tan cover for Father’s Day! Love watching your house progress and I can’t wait to see it evolve!

Abby, I don’t think I’ve been this excited for anyone before. Lol. I think a big part of it is that you guys are living my lifelong dream of building a house and are about to make it your very own (and I LOVE your style). I’m so happy you decided the share the process of it all so much with your readers. It seems less scary and even more exciting now! I can’t wait to see how you design and decorate each room, and I’ll think of you during the holidays when it’s even more special to be making brand new memories with your loves in your forever home. 🙂 There are so many fun times ahead!

  15. You guys so deserve this. You aren’t going to know what to do with all that space. I remember moving from our tiny condo into a house and it was awesome. It took a while for the boys to not feel like they needed to be right next to us! Can’t wait to see the finished house!

Very cool, Abby! I really am enjoying the updates! *I’m* excited… I just can’t imagine how y’all must be feeling! ☺
Had a neat idea about the dining room chandelier that my friend did with hers, because she didn’t like the one she had originally. Her mom actually painted it to make it look like a MacKenzie Childs piece and it’s so flippin’ cool! I know that MC isn’t your style, but if you feel like getting crafty (+ blog post idea! 😉 ) maybe you could find something neat on Pinterest.

I’m sure whatever you guys do it’ll look awesome. 🙂
