How to Get Your Husband and Kids On Board with Organization

Get your husband and kids on board with organization with these ideas and strategies from our whole family!

For as long as I’ve been blogging about organization, one question I’ve gotten over and over again is, “I’d love to be organized, but my husband and kids make it so difficult! How do I get them on board with organization?!”

As I mulled over the best possible way to answer that question, I concluded that there was no way I could answer it alone. I had to have the input of the other members of my household so they could weigh in on what it’s really like when it comes to organization in our house.

So last week when we were on vacation, Donnie pulled out his video camera, and I sat down with him, Connor, and Caleb to get their perspective on how we all work together to keep our home neat and tidy.

I didn’t give the boys the questions in advance, so this was all off-the-cuff! I have to say that I even learned some things myself from their insights and have some new ideas that I want to put into practice!

This video is more vlog style, so it’s a little longer than the videos we’ve done in the past, but I hope you’ll be able to come away with some strategies to implement with your own family as well!

I might be a little biased, but I thought those kiddos were awfully cute! 😉 And I loved hearing Donnie’s insight as well!

  4. Most organized person – me.
How I get my family to help – begging, threats, bribes. In that order.
Actually, I’ve learned that “if you build it, they will come”. If you come up with a system and its simple to use, they’ll usually use it (although I often have to follow up, but that’s simpler for me too.)
For example, my daughter is an athlete and I tried for years to get her to fold up all her work out clothing, uniforms and gear and put it away in her drawers and closet. Eventually, I tried sticking everything in a big laundry basket in her closet. It worked! It gave her more space in her drawers and closet, and (after she tosses everything out on the floor to find what she wants), she usually piles it back in the basket and stores it away. The goal – finding everything quickly – was met, and that’s what’s most important.
Thanks for all you do Abby. : )

Love that, Jill! I have a feeling you and I would be great friends, lol. 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing your system!

This is by far my favorite video to date! I love getting a glimpse into your family life. You have just the sweetest boys. 🙂 I love the idea of the paperless home – I think as Donnie mentioned it’s hard to get it started but easy to maintain after it’s started. I’m currently working on organizing my home office, so maybe I’ll look into going paperless.

Great tips throughout the whole video, thanks for posting. 🙂

Hope you guys had a wonderful vacation.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Aw, I’m so glad you enjoyed it! It’s actually my favorite, too! I loved hearing their answers. And yes… going paperless has been such a game changer for us, but at the beginning it definitely does require some work. Totally think it’s worth it, though! 🙂 We had a wonderful vacation but it’s been nice to be home! Hope you’re having an awesome weekend, Marly! <3

When Donnie was little he would walk to the doorway of his sister’s room, stop, look around, and say, “How can you stand this?” Not saying which sister!

I think I have a pretty good idea of who it was! 🙂 haha This had me laughing out loud. Thank you for sharing! <3

  7. It’s nice to know that your home gets a bit messy, too. We’re all human! When my kids were little, their bedrooms and the rec room were disastrous at times. Your family is adorable. I chuckled in several places throughout the video. It was nice to hear Donny’s perspective, and I truly think many guys do have a bit of tunnel vision, while women see more of the ‘whole picture’, but also are detail oriented. Thanks for an informative video and for sharing your family with us.

    1. justagirlabby says:

So glad you enjoyed it, Debbie! It was really fun for me to hear their answers, too! 🙂

  8. Lilian Matheson says:

I am definitely the most organized hahaha. But our house goes from hero to zero in no time. I love your tiles on motivation. My son is all about the allowance, my daughter like to win, and we could have an extra date out if the are picking up toys every day in the week.
I also love that you asked your husband to talk about it. My husband doesn’t have a place at all. All the places are places, so he never find anything. I believe helping him in his office would work, but my problem is that in a week he will have tho vs in A different place.
I will try this week. So, let is see how it goes . I will let you know

    1. justagirlabby says:

Yes! Definitely let me know! I’d love to know your results! 🙂 Good luck!

      ~Abby =)

  9. Thanks for sharing your family and their perspectives in the video. Very insightful, and beautiful family!

  10. Thoroughly enjoyed this video with the great advice! My husband is nearing retirement and I’ll definitely be “sharing” this with him. : )
And your boys did a WONDERFUL job! Please Congratulate them for me! : )

    1. justagirlabby says:

Aw, thank you so much, Rita! I was proud of how well they did, too! 🙂 So glad you enjoyed the video. Have a wonderful week!

      ~Abby =)

  11. Danielle Renke says:

I have been waiting for this post for years and didn’t even know it! You have such a beautiful family and it’s so great to see everyone on board! We have a huge issue in our home wondering who is going to do what. Having little “jobs” the each of us is responsible for will help that tremendously!

    Thanks for the insight!!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Yay! So glad it was helpful for you, Danielle! It really has been a great system for us. Let me know how it goes! <3

      ~Abby =)

  12. Loved this! Thanks for sharing:) My husband too loves working together. We used to all the time, but lately it seems like we do our own jobs. Great encouragement!
We are moving into our new home on Wednesday and I can’t wait to get it organized and keep it organized!
On a side note, you should do a makeup youtube! Would you please share your lip color and kind??? I love it and need a new one. My favorite one was discontinued. Hope your vacation was a great one!!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Oh, Becca… you are the sweetest! You made me laugh. I actually don’t wear lipstick. Sometimes chapstick but that’s it! I wouldn’t be a very good beauty vlogger! 🙂 haha Thanks so much for your kind words. Have a wonderful day!

      ~Abby =)
