Though we’ve been in our house for over a year now, there are still a ton of spaces that we haven’t even touched yet. Some of them will be big, extensive projects, but some of them are just plain and need a little refresh. The latter was the case with our guest bathroom, which is also the bathroom that our boys primarily use.

It wasn’t terrible by any stretch of the imagination… it was just pretty boring. The walls were white. The vanity was white. The sinks were white. There was a whole lot of white and not much else besides the old shower curtain that we had brought from our previous house.

The vanity organization was in a similar state: not a huge mess, but not a lot of great systems happening. There were a ton of items that we never used being stored in this space, and some items missing that would be helpful to have around, so I wanted to remedy that situation.

With guests coming to stay for the holidays and having visitors more often than usual at this time of year, it was time to give this space a little TLC– sprucing up the decor and getting it organized at the same time. We took a weekend and painted, added some new decor, and organized the vanity, and we are so thrilled with the result!

You can check it out in this week’s video or, if you prefer, read about it and see the photos below!

Guest Bathroom Refresh and Organization

Step 1: Paint!

I am always amazed at the power of paint, so the first thing I did was paint the walls of the bathroom. I like white, but the shade of white chosen by our builder always looks dingy and kind of sterile to me, so I was glad to get rid of it!

We had some paint leftover from when we redid Donnie’s office a few months ago and had really liked that color (Chain Reaction by Behr), so we decided to use it in this space as well. Already the room felt so much less stark and more welcoming!

Step 2: Bring in some pretty things! 🙂

After the paint had dried, I changed out the old, faded shower curtain for a fresh white, textured curtain from InterDesign. I think it has a hotel-like feel to it, which is perfect for welcoming guests.

We also added cushy and soft bath mats in water blue, also from InterDesign. (You can find these and more InterDesign decor and organization products by searching on Amazon, Target, Walmart, Bed, Bath, & Beyond, and The Container Store.)

To add a little more interest, we hung two floating shelves…

…and styled them with some wintery pictures that also matched our color scheme, decorative items, and a few little InterDesign containers that are pretty, but also double as organization to hold cotton balls, q-tips, and little cotton rounds.

This little wire basket was an InterDesign find as well, and it is perfect for holding a few extra washcloths and bars of soap!

We even changed out the garbage can, bringing in this cute “trash bucket”…

When we moved in, there was a towel rod on the wall by the door, but we replaced it with hooks because they make it so much easier for the boys to hang up their towels.

We added a picture frame above the hooks with prints that coordinate with the ones on the floating shelves, and the bathroom was looking so much prettier!

Step 3: Organize!

You know I couldn’t wait for this part! Because I am a huge nerd, getting to organize an entire space like a vanity feels like Christmas morning to me! 🙂 I cleared everything out of all of the cabinets and drawers so that I could start with a blank slate.

I first put down pretty contact paper in the bottoms of the cabinets and in the drawers for a little pop of pattern. Then I grabbed some containers and started to organize each portion of the vanity.

The first cabinet holds all of the extra toilet paper, which I put in extra large stacking bins from InterDesign. They allow me to really maximize the vertical space and– bonus– they even hide the ugly pipe that is right behind them!

One of the things I really wanted to do when we re-organized this space was to pare down my cleaning supplies to just the essentials that we use often, so I used a pretty little mint caddy (also from InterDesign) to hold the cleaning items I kept, along with some gloves to protect our skin while we’re cleaning.

I used my label maker to make cute cursive labels on clear tape so everyone can clearly see what goes where.

The drawer right beside the cabinet holds all of our cleaning rags and microfiber cloths.

To store them more neatly, I used square bins from InterDesign that fit perfectly in the drawer.

The small drawer above that one holds some of our smaller extra toiletries so the boys or guests can easily grab them if they need them– soap, and toothbrushes and toothpaste for both kids and adults!

Moving over to the next cabinet, we were able to neatly fit a bunch of essentials in this space…

Home Organization- guest bathroom refresh, bathroom organization, organized bathroom vanity, kids bathroom organization, farmhouse bathroom decorating, cottage bathroom decor, white bathroom vanity, InterDesign, Ryan Homes Palermo, cabinet under the sink, extra toiletries, toothbrushes and toothpaste, hair dryer storage

First, I like to try to keep the boys’ toothbrushes off the counter if I can so they’re not catching all of the airborne stuff that flies around in bathrooms. Eek.

In our last house I kept them in the medicine cabinet, but this house doesn’t have one, so I got a cute organizer from InterDesign and set it right up front so they boys could easily access their toothbrushes and toothpaste. There is also a little matching container with all of the little flossers that they like to use.

Behind the tooth brushing supplies is a bin that holds all of our larger backup toiletry items– both kids’ items for the boys and adult items for guests. We keep things like shampoo and conditioner, body wash, and deodorant. On the other side of this bin I placed all of our sun care products: sunblock and aloe vera gel and cream.

The other bin in this cabinet holds a spare hair dryer that guests can use when they come. It is from InterDesign, and I purposely got the one with a lid because I could easily stack another smaller bin on top of it if we need to store more items in the future. Whenever I’m organizing, I always try to leave room to grow rather than packing a space completely full!

There are two more drawers beside the cabinet. The bottom drawer holds wipes, again using the square InterDesign bins to keep them neat and tidy.

The top drawer holds a few little things that we use every day and want to be able to grab easily.

I think I got everything! I feel like this space is so much more welcoming and ready for guests. I feel so much better now that all of the items are neatly organized and we can find what we need.

Having the right bins like the ones we found from InterDesign really makes a huge difference in helping us stay organized AND they make the cutest bathroom decor too! You can find InterDesign products by searching on Amazon, Target, Walmart, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and The Container Store.
