DIY Painted Sign

Happy Thursday, my friends! Has this been a fun week or what?! So far we’ve had a fabulously feminine pegboard makeover, a spring home tour, and today I have a simple DIY painted sign and lots of spring inspiration for you! Woohoo!

Before we get to the giveaway, though, I’m sharing a super simple spring sign I recently made with my Silhouette! {How’s that for alliteration? 😉 } This was the first sign I had attempted with my Silhouette, so I was kind of nervous that I would mess the whole thing up, but everything came together in the end!

I started out with a leftover piece of plywood that I had hubby cut down to size for me.

I then painted the board white since that’s what color I wanted my lettering to be. Now I would love to tell you that I had the Silhouette cut my letters, they transferred perfectly, and I was on to the next thing, but it just wasn’t that easy. See those teeny tiny thin cursive letters? Yeah, they are no joke.

I originally tried to print them on the same contact paper I used for the “April Showers” lettering, but because the contact paper was so thin, they ripped apart easily and were quickly ruined. I then printed them on a thicker vinyl, which worked better, but I still had to be really, really careful when I was transferring them (I used painter’s tape), and it took a while to get everything on the board in the right place. As you can see, though, it all worked out…eventually.

Since it took SO long to get the lettering in place, I certainly didn’t want to risk any paint leaks, so I sealed the letters with a coat of decoupage. Then all that was left to do was to roll on a top coat of paint– I used Swan Sea by Behr.

I applied one generous coat of paint, stepped back long enough to snap this picture, and then peeled off the lettering while the paint was still wet so that the paint didn’t peel away with the vinyl. Shockingly, this worked with only very minimal bleeding of paint, and after some dry time, I had my beautiful sign!

I added the bunting for an extra spring-y touch– also a Silhouette project. The sign ended up being the perfect centerpiece for my floating shelves, and I was smitten!

Hooray for spring! Now if the weather would just start feeling like spring, I’d be all set… 😉

Thanks so much for stopping by today! Have a wonderful weekend!

Have you been doing any spring decorating lately?

Yes, I definitely feel like I’m breaking all of the “new Silhouette owner” rules… my very first project was a complicated stencil, and the first time I tried words, I used a super skinny font. Oh well! Go big or go home, right?! 😉 Thanks so much for your sweet words, Tasha! Enjoy your weekend!
