DIY Monogrammed Onesies
It’s no secret that I love monograms. I have one in almost every room of my house and am always looking for ways to incorporate them into a space. So when I wanted to make a gift for my friend who is having twin boys I figured, “Hey, why not monogram them too?!” When she gets sick of answering the question, “Now which one is which?” she can just dress them in these cute little onesies–problem solved! 🙂
These were relatively simple to make and only required a few supplies:
- Monogram, printed on card stock
- Onesies
- Acrylic paint
- Textile medium
- Paint brushes
- Chalk (not pictured)
You could also use fabric paint or a paint pen, but I used what I already had on hand and it worked well for me.
The first challenge I had to tackle was figuring out how to get my monogram image onto the onesie. I had seen the chalk transfer method used to place an image on wood and figured, “Hey, this will work for fabric, too, right?” Holding my monogram up to the window so I could see the letters, I traced a thick outline on the back side of my cardstock using chalk. {I tried to use a chalk color similar to the paint I would be using.}
Once I had outlined my monogram, I lined it up the way I wanted it on the onesie and using the back end of my paint brush, firmly traced the letters so that the chalk on the back of the cardstock would transfer to the onesie. I wasn’t sure it was going to work, but when I nervously pulled up the card, I had a perfect outline. Score!
Next, I mixed my paint with the textile medium {2 parts paint to one part textile medium} so that the onesies would be washable and the painted part would be less stiff. I put the cardstock monogram inside the onesie so that the paint wouldn’t leak through to the back of the material and began the painting process by outlining the letters. I made sure to turn my brush in such a way that any excess paint would get on the part of the letter that would be filled in anyway. After I had a painted outline in place, I was able to fill in the rest of the letters.
I then repeated the process on the second onesie, which was dark blue. While the lighter colored onesie was fine with one coat of paint, the darker one took three or four coats to really make the letters solid. After doing this to a couple of times, I would recommend going with lighter onesies and darker paint so there is less paint and therefore less stiffness to the material.
When the paint dried, I turned the onesies inside out and ironed them for a few seconds to help the paint set.
And there you have it–simple, personalized onesies, perfect for keeping those sweet little twinnies straight! 🙂 Not only are they great for twins, but this would be a cute baby shower gift for any mom-to-be. {If she’s willing to reveal baby’s name, that is!}
Hope you all are having a great week! Thanks for reading!

So cute! I have a onesie project in mind, but I was going to use my silhouette and an iron on transfer… I feel like a total slacker now! lol Awesome job!
You are definitely not a slacker! I am just too cheap to buy a Silhouette, so I have to find ways to work around it, lol. That sounds like a great project for little Evan! I bet he’s growing and growing these days! Hope you’re having a wonderful week!

LOVE IT…too cute, wish I was that creative or artsy…I’d just make a big mess, LOL
Thanks, Karen! You could totally handle it. I found that the chalk seemed to help make a barrier for the paint, so it was pretty easy to stay in the lines. Thanks so much for stopping by–have a wonderful day!
~Abby =)
Hard to believe you painted those by hand! They look perfect! This is such a fun baby shower gift idea!
Thanks, Kelly! I was actually shocked that I didn’t mess them up…that would have been much more my style. 😉 Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, girl!

You know me and my personalized onesie obsession. And I haven’t really seen monogrammed onesies before…super cute idea! (Genius method for transferring your chalk outline, btw. You should trademark that move!)
Yes, I have to resort to caveman-esque techniques since I’m too cheap to buy the machine to do it for me, but it works, lol! I am still ooh-ing and aah-ing over your adorable duck onesie. Just too cute! Hope you had a happy Friday, friend!

I think these are fantastic- they really speak to my inner southern girl!
Thanks, Misti! Someone else mentioned that everyone in the south loves monograms! I think I was born in the wrong part of the country because of my love of monograms, the word “y’all”, and those adorable southern accents. {Not to mention the warmer weather!} Maybe I can convince hubby that we need to move… 😉 Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a great week!
