I thought about calling this post “A Vanity to Changing Table to Entry Desk to Kitchen Sideboard Upcycle,” but that seemed a bit wordy. In reality, though, that is what this little piece of furniture has been through. This is the third post I’ve done about it on the blog! 🙂

Way, way back before I was born this piece of furniture was a vanity that had an attached mirror, and it was part of my mom’s bedroom set when she was growing up. Somehow I ended up with it when Donnie and I got married, and when our little Connor was born, we painted it white, threw a changing pad on top, and used it as a changing table in his nursery.

Later, after Caleb, our second and final baby, was done with the diaper phase, I painted the “changing table” black (because I was very into painting furniture black at the time 🙂 ) and it became a desk in the entry area of our house.

(This photo is from one of my very first blog posts. It’s so funny to look back on!)

Anyway, I graduated from my “paint all of the furniture black” phase and decided to brighten up this piece, still using it as a “command center” area in our entryway.

I actually really liked the piece in the aqua color, but I knew when we started the kitchen reno that I’d probably need to find another place for it in our house.

Meanwhile, there was one area of the kitchen that left me scratching my head. Our kitchen is at the front of our townhouse and in order to maintain a unified look with the other townhouses in our row, they put a low window in the front of our kitchen, which may look all nice and unified from the outside but was a huge pain to try to decorate around from the inside.

The window was too low to be able to fit cabinets underneath it, but if I didn’t have anything there, it left this big gaping hole of unused space in our kitchen.

After we tore down that weird little divider wall between the kitchen and the entry, we still had the vanity/changing table/desk sitting out there because I didn’t know where else to put it.

Then one day I pushed it over in front of the window to get it out of my way while I was doing something else, and it was like the heavens opened up and light shined down on it and angels started singing… (Okay, maybe that part was in my head, but it sure seemed like it!)

It was the *exact* width and height to be the perfect kitchen sideboard! It’s like it was meant to be!! Although I truly did love the aqua color, it was a different shade than the other accessories I had already purchased for the room and would have clashed with the rug I had picked out, so this little piece of furniture got yet another makeover!

This time I decided to go with Behr Premium Plus Ultra Iron Mountain N520-5, which is the same color I used to paint the vanity in our master bedroom and loved it.

Since there wasn’t much surface to cover and the paint glided on oh-so-smoothly, the painting process went super quickly. After it dried I sealed it with a few coats of polyacrylic, and I had my upcycled kitchen sideboard!

I love how the new color ties in with the rest of the kitchen! The knobs were also meant to be…

Not only are they aqua like the rest of our kitchen accents, but they are also hexagon shaped like our backsplash! My little type-A perfectionist heart did a leap of joy when I found them. 🙂

Some other pretty aqua details bring that color that I love so much back into the space and tie everything together.

Also my family really loves when I use real food for my photo props. They were standing right outside this shot waiting to help me “clean up” when I was finished with the apples. Boys! 😉

This little vanity-turned-changing table-turned-desk-turned-sideboard has certainly been through a lot in its lifetime, but I’m loving its most recent change!

I was glad to be able to find yet another place for this piece in our home AND find a solution to the “what do I put under this weird window” problem at the same time. It really was a win-win!

[Psssttt… You can find ideas for organizing every single room of the house in this post!]

Have a great day!

This is beautiful! I need to do something like this with an old desk I have that is *mostly* functional, but could definitely use some updating. Thanks so much for the idea!

  4. I love how that little table looks in your kitchen and the knobs are so pretty. I have a couple of pieces that have made the rounds in my house, too. Love when you can up cycle something into something even prettier.

I loved seeing the evolution of this furniture piece – so crazy how one item can go through so many looks and purposes. I have to say though, I am a big fan of where it has now ended up – color and function wise. Awesome! I put it in my calendar to link up our upcycled furniture projects. Thanks!

Super cute – it looks great in that colour. Now the aqua accents really pop against it! Great job Abby!!

  9. Gorgeous! I love how the knobs are hexagons to co-ordinate. Do you still have a table (or alternative replacement) at your command center?

I love this paint color and it looks amazing on your sideboard. It’s so funny how moving a piece of furniture – even accidentally – can make such an impact in a room. Of course my favorite part is that you’ve had this in your family for so long 🙂

  12. Can I have some details about the polyacrylic you use? I have a wooden dresser with hutch that I need to paint, and I just can’t decide if I am going to use regular or chalk paint. Either way I know I need to seal it since it will be a toddler’s dresser!

  13. What a great idea! So creative…Thanks for sharing <3

  14. That is how I usually find the right spot for most furniture. Looks great.
