A Pivot

I have been blogging for about 4 1/2 years now. And I love it. What started out as a little hobby blog has turned into our family’s full time business– and I am still pinching myself over it! This truly has been a dream come true, and Donnie and I both feel so blessed to be able to call blogging our job.

But about a year ago, I feel like I hit a rut. It seemed like I had gone from writing about what was on my heart and sharing projects that really got me excited to posting what I thought would do well on Pinterest or Google or even what I thought other people wanted me to post.

And while all of those are good things to take into consideration, my preoccupation with them seemed to dull that “spark” I once had for blogging. It wasn’t new and exciting anymore, and I began to feel like I was just going through the motions. My creativity was sapped. And after writing hundreds and hundreds of blog posts, I sort of started feeling like I had run out of things to say.

Last August I attended Haven, a conference for home/DIY bloggers, and the incredible John and Sherry Petersik of Young House Love were the closing keynote speakers. They shared their story of feeling like they had lost “the spark,” which led them to take a break from blogging, and talked about what they learned along the way.

The thing that jumped out at me most was their revelation that in order to avoid burn out, they needed to try new and different things that were interesting to them, things that they weren’t necessarily experts at, that were outside their comfort zone a bit and that were FUN and brought a sense of excitement. They created an adult coloring book. They started a podcast. And the spark started to return.

As I sat there and listened to them speak, in my mind I was yelling, “Yes! Yes! Yes! This is exactly what I needed to hear!” I was all too familiar with the burned-out-lose-the-spark feeling that they had described, and I knew that I needed to make some sort of pivot to make sure the flame didn’t burn out completely.

And then life happened.

We were house-less for two months as we sold our old house and waited for the new one to be finished. We finally moved into our new house and just as we began to get settled, Christmas hit– the craziest time of year for home bloggers. Then we began revamping our blogging eBook/course, Building a Framework, which was in desperate need of an overhaul. Just when we got that finished up, I had surgery.

And finally, finally I could physically do nothing but lay in bed and think. Life slowed down for a bit and Donnie and I began to talk about what we would do next. It was finally time make that long-overdue pivot.

We began to ask ourselves, “What sounds like fun? What are we interested in learning more about? If we could focus in on anything, what would it be?”

Abby Organizes YouTube channel- https://www.youtube.com/abbyorganizes

I have always loved speaking and teaching– I’m a preacher’s kid, so I blame my dad for that trait! 🙂 Donnie has always gravitated toward the technical behind-the-scenes type stuff. He loves doing research and figuring out the best tools and systems to use. We both have always sort of been organization nerds. We love order and systems and coming up with ways to help our home run more smoothly.

As we continued to think about how we could combine all of these different attributes into an outlet that sounded fun for us, one thing kept coming up over and over again: video.

Now we’ve made a few videos for the blog here and there using basic equipment and minimal editing software, but we didn’t have much idea of what we were doing at all! And we really had/have no clue about using YouTube for anything other than simply hosting the videos that we wanted to share on the blog.

So with our abundance of passion and incredible lack of knowledge, we decided to start an organization-focused YouTube channel, which we’ve called Abby Organizes!

Donnie began researching video equipment and taking classes on video editing. I took a YouTube course to learn the basics so we could have a general framework for what we wanted to do. I also started watching YouTube videos like a mad woman to figure out the components of a quality video, the best way to make them flow, and just generally what came across well on video (and what didn’t).

We are still very, very, VERY far from being pros at this. We still have a ton to learn. Our first videos may not be awesome, but that’s okay. We’re starting. We’re learning new things and stepping outside our comfort zones. And we’re working on getting that spark back!

So beginning next Tuesday, we plan to share one organizing video per week. We’ll of course post it on the YouTube channel, but I will also share a coordinating blog post here that will have the video included. (And don’t worry– I’ll still be sharing other decorating posts and the occasional blogging post on the blog as well!) Our hope is that the Abby Organizes YouTube channel will become a helpful go-to resource for organizing inspiration, tips, and strategies!

Our first official video may not be live until Tuesday, BUT we wanted to give you a little sneak peek, so we created a short channel trailer for you today! We would be so honored if you would take a peek below and subscribe to our channel on YouTube!

Thank you so much for your support of our new incredibly-exciting-but-way-outside-our-comfort-zones adventure! We can’t wait to dive in and learn as we go!

(AND if you have any requests for specific organizing videos you’d like us to create, please leave them in the comments below! We want to know what would be most helpful for YOU!)

Update: See how our YouTube channel is going after just three months in this post!

Hope you’re having a wonderful week!

Wow This looks great…Good job on moving forward in a great direction for both you and your husband. I think I’m looking for organization tips for my office. I’m always cluttered with paper. 12. So FUN! I love you guys and cannot wait to watch these videos. This is going to be so awesome.

Do you plan to upload them on Facebook too? I think it’d be another great way to get them out and an easy way for your super fans (like me!) to share them.

Abby, you looked amazing! And I loved the editing Donnie. I can’t wait for more.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thanks so much, Jackie! Yes, we will be sharing them on Facebook (maybe just a teaser, shorter video? I’m not sure yet! haha)… but thanks so much for your encouragement, friend! So appreciate it! <3

  17. This is so exciting, Abby! I love organizing too, but you’re clearly a pro and I have so much to learn from you! My husband is a high school teacher and talks about my blog with his students pretty regularly; he tells me often that they all say, “She really needs to start having video on her blog!” Makes me a bit nervous because of all that’s entailed with video, so I’m excited to learn from you and your new journey with videos as a part of your online business ventures!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Video is definitely intimidating but we’re excited to take the plunge! Glad you’ll be following along with us, Mauri! We appreciate it! Hope you’re having an awesome week! <3

  19. So excited for you and this new venture! I know it is going to be amazing! I am looking for some organizing tips for my craft room (more like a large craft closet with a weird shape that I am trying to work with!), entry way closet, and garage! Ok, that’s it…for now!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Yay! Thanks so much for the suggestions, Tiffany! Glad you’ll be on this fun new adventure with us! 🙂 Hope you’re having an awesome week!

I’m so excited for Abby Organizes! I have always been into organizing, but since I’ve been busier with kids and a blog I’ve seemed to lost my knack. I look forward to gaining new inspiration from your videos! I’m so happy for you to regain your “spark” as well. Although I would’ve never been able to tell, you’re always great!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Aw, thanks so much, Stephanie! Should be fun! Glad you’ll be joining us! 🙂 Have a great evening!

I can’t wait to see your first video. When I first saw your headline on Facebook I about fell over. Today we have schedule to start our new direction and blog relaunch as well. Pivot. I liked that term. Of course, my posts are already written so I won’t be stealing it.

Congratulations on following God’s leading. We just watched your Webinar last night and I can’t wait to wait your weekly organizing series. (Hubs wants me to try video sooner or later too.)

    1. justagirlabby says:

Video is definitely intimidating at first but I agree with your hubby… you should definitely try it! 🙂 Congrats on your relaunch and new direction as well… I’m sure it will be fantastic! Hope you’re having a great week! <3

  30. I got concerned for a minute there thinking you were retiring your blog! I love the new venture though. Y’alls videos in Framework are great and I enjoyed last night’s training video as well. I’m looking forward to watching the videos!

Not retiring yet! 🙂 haha Thanks so much, Amanda! So glad you’ll be joining us! Have a great evening! <3

  31. Ashley Wilson says:

This is so exciting! Video is definitely the future so I think it is so smart too (like everything you guys do). I would love, love a blogging post with some of your research on the elements that make a video awesome. And the video equipment you choose. I’ve been doing video, but just a little here and there and would love to grow that part of my business.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Ooo, thanks so much for the suggestion! Maybe I can convince Donnie to get on camera for that one! 🙂 Thanks so much for the encouragement, Ashley! Should be a fun new adventure! Hope you’re having a wonderful week! <3

  32. Carrie Willard says:

Wow Abby, this was timely for me. I’ve been blogging for 14 years and love it, but lately was working SO HARD for little return. I learned from all the right people, bought the right courses, implemented them step by step, and still, blogging felt like an uphill battle every day. If I stopped doing all the things, my traffic would plummet. It was a hamster wheel.

Then, 6 weeks ago I started a direct sales business promoting a product I had fallen in love with. Since then, my income has skyrocketed. Last month I earned enough money to pay my mortgage twice – and the money is far exceeding my blogging income. I would be a fool to continue doing what’s not working. Still, it’s hard. The cognitive dissonance is exhausting! I’m excited and happy about my new business, but grieving in a way for my blog and what could have been. Oh well. Onward and upward!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Yay! Congrats on your success, Carrie! Totally understand the grieving part, though. Maybe you can find a way to still enjoy your blog without the pressure of making an income from it? I know how stressful that can be. Very excited for you that it seems like you found your “niche”… not always easy to do! Sending hugs your way! <3

      ~Abby =)

  33. Awesome, Abby – I can’t wait to check these out. I have been wanting to do YouTube videos for yoga, informational type stuff, but timing is all wrong for me now (I can relate to your move, Christmas, surgery, etc.) so I am excited to see what you guys do and learn as well!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thanks so much, Maria! Glad you’ll be following along with us! Hope you’re having an awesome week! <3

      ~Abby =)

  34. Oh my gosh, Abby, yes! I am so excited for you guys! I definitely subscribe to a few great channels and I know yours is going to be great, too. Learning curve, psh.
Organizing a fridge, streamlining a mudroom or entry space, and organizing my van are all things I’d like to see. I’d also like to see the occasional vlog, day in the life, q&a or anything fun like that. One youtuber I follow is doing a vlog series where we follow her around all week but it has a theme like “productivity hacks” or “newborn routine” and I think it’d be cool to follow you around for like “how I plan my day” or “organizing hacks I use everyday” maybe.
Anyway, glad you guys found the spark again, looking forward to this new part of your journey.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Ah! Love all these suggestions, Celeste! Thank you SO much! So glad you’ll be following along with us on this journey. Should be fun! 🙂 Hope you’re having a wonderful week! <3

      ~Abby =)

  36. Can’t wait to see! You did great on your introduction! Best of luck. Enjoy!

  44. Kasey Lewis says:

How exciting! The trailer is excellent so I’m sure the rest will be too! Great job!

I would love tips for keeping systems running with little kids in the house! I work hard to organize and develop systems but my kids (8, 6, & 2) never keep it going. So frustrating! Specifically, clothes, toys, and kid’s dishes (the older 2 are responsible for unloading the dishwasher everyday. If i showed you a picture of how they put their dishes away you would die! They’re also responsible for setting the table so I don’t have to open that cabinet very often but when I do… Mama’s head explodes!!).

    1. justagirlabby says:

Love these suggestions! Thank you so much, Kasey! <3

      ~Abby =)

  45. Karen @ a house full of sunshine says:

      ~Abby =)

  46. How exciting! I love all that you have shared in this post, it highlights what an amazing, courageous risk taker you are and I find that super inspiring! I can’t wait to watch you on YouTube and take in all the organizing goodness you have to share! I am also pretty obsessed with organizing and am always keen to learn something new! Off I go to subscribe to your channel asap!

    1. justagirlabby says:

You are the sweetest! Thank you so much, Kerri! Hope you have a wonderful week! <3

  47. I didn’t even have to think twice about subscribing to your new channel! I can’t wait to see your videos. I, myself, love organizing and hope to start a professional organizing business soon. We (a family of 4) are also moving to a new home at the end of the summer but we’ll be renting – so I’m hoping maybe you can include some tips about organizing a space when you can’t make major changes to the home.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thanks so much for your suggestion, Kristina! So glad you’ll be joining us! Have the best week! <3

      ~Abby =)

  48. Hi Abby- Thank you for sharing your story on feeling a little burned out and needing to try something new. I have only been blogging for a few months and while I absolutely love it, I have wondered if I will be able to sustain the feeling for years. It’s so motivating to hear of other alternatives for sharing your information. Can’t wait to watch your new video series! Best of luck! Erin

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thanks so much, Erin! So glad it was helpful for you and that you’ll be following along with us! We are looking forward to it… should be fun! 🙂 Hope you have a great week!

      ~Abby =)

  49. I’ve enjoyed your blog for a long time now and your video teaser looks terrific. I homeschool and have tried for years to get organized and be more efficient. I could use help making time to plan (my kids are 15, 13, & 5), cook nutritious meals in a shorter time, store books & manipulatives for school better, help my boys (13 & 5) effectively share a super small room and have it organized & easy for them to maintain, go through files that have piled up for 20+ years of married life, decorate my home (I’ve had fabric and a plan, but not everything needed to complete several projects for a year now, but other things in life keep taking priority), have my yard mainenance done better (without hiring it out!), assist in taking care of my elderly mom who is is a skilled nursing facility well (this requires a full day every 2-3 weeks), and here is the one no one ever covers: have good uninterrupted quality time regularly with my husband and have energy to nourish our relationship. Thanks for asking! Hope you can answer all my questions and get me in order!!! I pray blessings and favor on you and your family in all your endeavors! 🙂

    1. justagirlabby says:

I love those suggestions! Thank you so much, Selena! Have a wonderful week! <3

      ~Abby =)

  50. Sounds like an exciting pivot! I am so not prone to organizing, so I will need to check out your videos :-p I am specifically in need of help figuring out how to organize my craft room, so I’d love to see how you’d tackle a space like that!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Ooo, I will definitely be covering that as I have yet to organize my office/craft room in the new house! Thanks for the suggestion, Emily! Hope you’re having a wonderful week! <3

      ~Abby =)

  51. I loved reading the blog but can’t get the picture out of my mind…what is he color of the blue in the office? It looks so peaceful!

    1. justagirlabby says:

The color is Sherwin Williams Rainwashed. I LOVE IT! It really is so peaceful. Thanks so much for stopping by, Tamara! <3

Awesome!! I love to organize so I look forward to checking out your organizing tips! We recently moved from a new house which was almost completely organized, to an older farm house.. It has been a process, but it’s coming together slowly!

Thanks so much, Sarina! So glad you’ll be following along! It’s hard starting over isn’t it? I am in the same boat! Trying to figure out all new systems! 🙂 Fun too, though! Hope you’re having a great week!

  53. This is wonderful. Looking forward to some tips. I desperately need help with organization.

Love the room you were doing your video in. What color is that on the walls? I am getting ready to redo my office.

    Congrats on this newest adventure!!

Thanks so much, Joy! The color of the walls is Sherwin Williams Rainwashed. I LOVE IT! Hope you will too! 🙂 Have a wonderful day!

  54. Hi Abby!
Let me first start off by saying that your blog is one of my absolute favorites and you have inspired me to start my own blogging adventure. I have subscribed to your YouTube channel and I’m loving the content so far! I’m kind of an organization junky and love all your helpful tips and tricks you provide. Keep up the great work and I will continue to follow your journey as I start mine.

Aw, thanks so much, Jessica! I really appreciate your encouragement! Have a great week! <3

  55. Yay, Abby I’m so excited, you’re going to do great on youtube! You’ve got the stuff for youtube, so just keep going at it with confidence and let your essential self shine through! The only advice I would offer is if you can think of your advice from the standpoint of someone like me who is AWEFUL at organizing, making things simple and easy to understand for novices in this specialty who want to be more like you but are not naturally inclined. If you can appeal to the people like me also, you will have it made on youtube. Best of luck girl!

Thanks so much for the encouragement, Julie! Have a wonderful week! <3

  56. Hi there! Love the office. What’s the name of the desk? The link is not working, unfortunatnetly. Maybe I can find it by name.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Monica! It was the Mitchell Computer Desk from Joss & Main. I’m not seeing it on their site right now, so it may be out of stock at the moment. So sorry about that!

Really happy to hear about your new video adventure Abby! I have also been blogging for almost 2 years now and sometimes I just want to post something that excites me but I hold back because it may not be relevant to my audience. I think it’s great you are rekindling that spark and continuing to try new things. Can’t wait to check out your videos!

Aw, thanks so much, Juju! I really appreciate the encouragement! If possible, try tying in the thing that excites you with your current topic and see how it goes over with your audience… you never know! 🙂 Have a wonderful week! <3
