5 Myths about Writing and Launching an eBook

These myths about writing eBooks hold so many people back from achieving bigger and better things with their business! Don't believe them! Click through to the post to read more!

I’ve talked to a lot of bloggers and online business owners lately about writing and launching an eBook. It’s something that I’m passionate about because I’ve seen the huge difference that writing and launching eBooks has made in our business, and therefore for our family as well. In my conversations with fellow bloggers, I often see the same few questions or hesitations come to the surface, and I totally understand their fears.

I used to have the exact same ones.

But after going through six launches in the past two years, I’m thrilled to say that these concerns and hesitations are myths. They’re not true. They can be overcome. And they definitely shouldn’t hold you back if you’re thinking of writing an eBook.

So what are these common objections? And what makes them false? I’m so glad you asked!

Myth #1: My audience will get mad at me for trying to sell them something.

If you get all annoying and sales-y and try to push something at your audience over and over again, yes, they may get a little miffed. But truly, our goal as bloggers is to connect with our readers and help meet their needs as best we can. We do that day in and day out through our blog posts, but sometimes there are topics that are to big to be covered in just ten bullet points or one thousand words.

These topics, this information that would help readers and make their lives easier, may be best served in eBook format, and if the result is something of great value to your audience, they won’t be able to wait to get their hands on it. Keep your audience and their needs at the forefront, and they will thank you for sharing your expertise with them.

Myth #2: I have to be the world’s leading expert on a topic to write an eBook about it.

And speaking of “expertise”… I almost didn’t write my first eBook, Building a Framework, because I was afraid I wasn’t enough of an expert on the topic. I had only been blogging for one year, and I knew that there were a lot of people who knew way more about blogging than I did.

What Donnie pointed out to me, though, and the reason I went ahead with the eBook in the first place, was that I was the perfect person to speak to new bloggers and bloggers who wanted to grow their audience because I had just been there. I was currently there. So I could resonate with those groups of people more closely since I was in the trenches with them and could still remember what it felt like to be where they were.

Thank goodness I listened to that smart husband of mine because Building a Framework is not only now our top selling eBook, but it has helped us create a community of awesome, like-minded bloggers who are helping each other navigate through this whole crazy blogging thing, and it is so fun to see!

Myth #3: It’s not possible to keep up with life, family, and a blog and write an eBook at the same time.

I’m not going to lie– writing and launching an eBook is not this super easy little thing that will take a few minutes to accomplish. It is a big undertaking. But it most definitely can be done. I’ve found ways to create time in my schedule, alter my blog posting methods, and work smarter rather than harder in order to get an eBook out the door. And once it has launched, I have a passive income stream that will continue to work for me and bring in revenue day after day and month after month. It’s pretty amazing!

Donnie and I recently did a scope (a video on Periscope, a live video streaming app) where we shared how we manage to produce quality blog content even when we don’t have a lot of time (aka when we’re writing an eBook!).

Myth #4: The tools needed to execute an eBook launch are confusing, so I’ll never be able to learn them.

This was one of my big hangups as well. I’m not the best with technology, so all of the “back end” work of writing and launching an eBook felt very intimidating to me. Once you know which tools to use, though, you only have to learn them once. It may take a day or two to get your bearings, but once you have it down, you have acquired a skill that you can use over and over again for multiple eBooks, increasing your revenue stream each time!

We’ll even help you get started! Donnie recently wrote a post about the 6 essential tools we use to write and launch eBooks and explains why and how we use each one!

Myth #5: No one is going to buy my eBook.

This seems to be everyone’s greatest fear, that they’ll put all of this time and effort into writing an eBook, put it out there for sale and then… crickets. There is a way to avoid this problem, though. You have to have a solid launch plan in place. When you take the time to get organized, make a detailed marketing plan, and warm up your audience to the idea of your eBook before it launches, sales will most definitely start rolling in on launch day.

One of the most (well actually, probably the most) significant pieces of your launch plan is growing a focused, dedicated email list who is interested in learning more about your specific topic.

I know the process of writing and launching an eBook can feel intimidating– believe me, I was very intimidated the first time I started down that road– but it is possible, and the rewards are great. With eBooks you can reach and help more people than with blog posts alone. You can establish authority in your niche and grow your blog by leaps and bounds. And you can create passive income streams that will continue to work for you over and over again, which is a pretty amazing thing!

Don’t let these myths and fears hold you back. Utilize some of the resources I mentioned above, make a solid plan, and commit to writing an eBook that can help your readers tremendously. I promise– you’ll thank yourself later!

Writing an ebook is on my list of big, fat, juicy goals (those ones that are slightly terrifying and equally as exciting) – I really appreciate hearing from someone who has done it and seeing a more transparent view of the whole process. Dispelling myths is a HUGE part of confidence building for me – that lady in my head can get awfully loud and negative when it’s time to step out of my comfort zone! 🙂

Thank you for your periscope yesterday. I enjoyed seeing you too and all the good information. All the tips on networking were very informative and I was able to connect with one of the women on your Periscope. I am a over 50 blogger and she is an over 40. I am just starting out as of last week so very new.
Your e-books and blog site has inspired my daughter started her blog a couple months ago and she has inspired me. Tried to start blogging about 15 years ago and was unable to get the information I needed. Your information is so easy to understand and from a woman’s perspective I am going to start my training over again.
Again thank you for all your help

  3. Hey Abby, I love that you pointed out Myth #5. We all have that ‘I’m not an expert’ coupled with ‘No one’s going to buy it fear.’ I appreciate the resources you have been putting out with regards to launching ebooks. This is definitely on my wish list. I actually went ahead to grab Authority on your recommendation and it was a great read. Look forward to digging into your latest email course as well.

  4. This is something that is definitely on my list of goals for my blog! It’s something for me which is possibly a few years away but the questions and fears are still there to work on – great post! 🙂

Just starting the process of formulating my outline for an eBook. I have to say it does feel daunting trying to manage day-to-day blogging and then adding a book on top of that. I started blogging about 6 months ago with the help of your Building a Framework book, so still trying different strategies to be the most productive. I appreciate the information you are creating about launching an eBook. I’ll pop over to Periscope to see what strategies you use to work smarter 🙂
