‘Tis the season for holiday vignettes, and I am all about them this week! Yesterday I shared our Christmas hutch decor, and today I have floating shelves for you!

Now one of the things I hear often from people is that they don’t know how to style floating shelves or what types of things to put into their vignettes or that it can be expensive to put together that much “stuff.”

Luckily, vignettes are one of my favorite things to use in my decor AND I am one of the cheapest people alive, 😉 so I’ve come up with a few tricks and tips for putting together a Christmas vignette that is both beautiful and inexpensive.

Here are some of my favorite things to use in my Christmas displays:

1. Ornaments

Think Dollar Tree. Ornaments are great fillers for holiday decor and they can be so inexpensive! Sure, you might want to splurge on some nicer ones for the tree, but for fillers, the dollar store ornaments work just fine. There is probably about $2-3 dollars worth of ornaments in this vignette- that’s it!

2. Vessels

The thing I love about vessels is that most of them can be used year round. The lantern and pitcher on the bottom shelf, for example, have been used in my summer, fall, AND Christmas shelf decor this year (shhhhh… don’t tell!), but by filling them with different things, they become versatile and can work for any season. The little striped pails are from the Target dollar spot and I’ve used them all over our house for many different purposes!

3. Free (or Super Cheap) Natural Elements

Nature is packed full of beautiful items we can add to our decor for FREE! My dad spends a lot of time in the woods because he loves the outdoors, so I always get him to bring me some fresh greenery or pinecones, all of which cost a grand total of $0! I found the grapevine wreath at Trader Joe’s for $4 and added my own gold berry garland. The same wreath at a craft store would cost at least 4-5 times as much.

4. Candles

I have a whole collection of candles and candle holders which, like the vessels, are extremely versatile from season to season. Since they are inexpensive and come in varying heights, they are great fillers when you have an empty spot that just needs a little somethin’.

5. DIY-ed Elements

Sometimes a piece is just waiting for your own little DIY touch. My buddy the deer was originally brown paper mache, and I snagged him at Hobby Lobby when he was 50% off. I simply spray painted him white and made him a bow tie from some wire ribbon + my hot glue gun, and he was the perfect centerpiece for my Christmas shelf display!

Putting together a vignette doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. Chances are you already have a lot of what you need to make something awesome for the holidays! Look around your house for some of the items I mentioned above, put them together, and you will be amazed with the result! 🙂 Happy decorating!

These are such good tips! I ran out of time/budget to decorate my dining table, but I am thinking that filling a vase with some ornaments will save the day :). One thing I did to style my shelf for Christmas was hand letter a quote from my favorite Christmas movie and put it in a frame I already had. Nothing beats free, custom decor!

I adore the deer! That was a great idea!
I concur regarding cheap ball ornaments. They are also a great thing to pick up after Christmas because they are even cheaper and aren’t broken (like many after-Christmas sale ornaments). I say all of that having several different colors saved up in the garage, some of which I haven’t even used yet, so I may have a problem…haha!
    Thanks for the beautiful ideas!

  5. This is just a beautiful vignette!!! Its so fresh looking with all the bright white, green and red! Is that long oval shaped red container from ikea, just painted red? I had a pink one from my wedding and it looks amaaazing in red! I’m going to pick up a few next time I am in, they look great in rich colors because the lacey detail is more prominent.

    Really enjoyed this post!
    Thanks, Julie

Thank you so much, Julie! The container was already red when I purchased it– no painting necessary! 🙂 Hope you have a very Merry Christmas!
