A Gold and White Dresser

There was a phase of my life where I thought it would be really awesome to paint all of the furniture in my house black. Dressers, vanities, headboards, nightstands– nothing was safe from me, my paint brush, and a gallon of really, really dark paint. That phase has since ended, and I’m currently in the process of re-painting everything to make it lighter, brighter, and more my style. (Shoulda just left it alone in the first place… 😉 ) The little desk in my front entry was the first to get a makeover and now serves as the anchor piece in our family command center. This month it was time to take on my old dresser:

Ick. Did I mention that the black shows every smudge and fingerprint? The black shows every smudge and fingerprint. Not only that, but this piece actually has some pretty neat details, and the black was hiding them rather than showing them off. I have had this dresser for as long as I can remember. It was part of my bedroom set growing up and when I moved out of my parents’ house, it came with me and never went back. (Thanks, mom and dad! 🙂 ) It was time for a change, and I had something a little classy and glamorous in mind.

I knew I wanted to go lighter, but rather than go with a single color, I thought it would be fun to add some pretty metallic details. So after I wiped down the entire piece with water and a mild soap, I grabbed a can of gold spray paint and covered the base of the dresser as well as the drawer handles.

Then it was time to bring in my not-so-secret weapon:

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Behr’s Marquee line of paint, and for good reason– has the best coverage of any paint I’ve ever used! I knew that their Cameo White would be perfect for this project. The process was actually a pretty simple one. I first used a brush to paint the drawer details and to cut in around the handles. Then I took a mini roller and rolled on the rest of the paint. A couple coats of polyacrylic sealed the deal, and I ended up with…

A gorgeous gold and white dresser! It almost doesn’t look like the same piece! I’m loving all of the little details.

And don’t forget about my favorite part… the before and after!

Yippee! I’m always amazed at the difference a little bit of {super duper awesome} paint can make!

What kind of polyacrylic did you use. When I used it on white painted furniture it looked like it yellowed.

BEAUTIFUL!!! Such a transformation from black to white. And the GOLD!! Don’t even get me started. 😉 I have to admit, I’m also one of those that had a “dark” phase and painted all furniture black. And, also like you, I’m slowly starting to repaint stuff into a lighter prettier color!! Love it, looks so pretty under that mirror!

  15. *SWOON* Ok, I am inspired. White and gold. I went through a black period and have enjoyed the look. But this is so much happier, warmer, and this-decade-er. Pinning!

  16. I definitely went through the DARK furniture phase and now am doing the same thing, everything bright and white! Love the transformation and love that you painted the legs gold, too. Perfect update!

    1. justagirlabby says:

It’s so funny– I’ve had several people say they did the dark furniture phase too! 🙂 Thanks so much for your sweet comment, friend!

  17. JaneEllen says:

Wow, what an incredible difference. The gold legs and hardware give this dresser a significant difference, classy, the white gives it clean lines. I love it. Your old dresser must be kicking her heels up and feeling pretty good about herself.
Happy weekend and Halloween. enjoy tomorrow.

  18. Beautiful. I recently used Behr Marquee for several blue pieces of furniture and it performed so well! So here’s the question, I do lots of white mid century pieces for customers and to seal them, I use wax although I prefer some sort of harder sealer like a water based polyacrylic. But the polyacrylic I’ve used in the past yellows the piece. Have you found that to be a problem for you?

  19. Ursula @ Home Made by Carmona says:

Love it! Great idea adding the gold in there… who doesn’t love a little metallic?

  27. Beautiful! I love the structure of the dresser, it was a really good “DIY material”. I’m currently finishing the interior of my first real home and I’m searching exactly for the same: no more IKEA stuff, I want to have some pieces with a story attached. I know that this one is a kind of family heritage but where are you usually buying old furniture? In antique stores? On garage sales? I know only the pricey side of antique stores here in Vancouver so I desperately need some help! Please, share some tricks 🙂

  28. Beautiful transformation! With this paint, is a separate coat of primer not necessary?

    1. justagirlabby says:

The Marquee paint is designed to go cover other paint without having to use a separate primer, so I just scuffed the old paint up a little bit with some sandpaper and painted right over top of it! Hope you’re having a great week, Rachel!

      1. Thank you for the reply, Abby! Very helpful to know.
