Clearance Wall Art Hack

I’m sharing the easiest project on the planet today.

I considered not even posting it, but then I wanted to prove {mostly to my hubby} that my habit of buying things just because they’re on clearance actually does pay off sometimes. 😀 I was also excited that this was my last little finishing touch on my #fabulouslyfemininehomeoffice makeover that I’m planning to reveal on Wednesday! Woohoo!!

A few months ago I found this chevron wall art on an end cap at Target for $5 or something ridiculously cheap like that. Thinking that it would be a fun piece in a gallery wall someday, I snatched it up, brought it home, and stashed it away in my office. When I was looking for one final piece for my office makeover, I pulled it out and decided to give it a little hack so it would match the rest of the space.

Besides my piece of art, I also used:

  • A paper plate, for paint mixing
  • Paint; white and Behr’s Rosy Lavender (left over from my pegboard makeover)
  • Paint brushes (I ended up using 4.)

Fortunately, my original piece came apart easily, so I was able to detach the colored cardboard-ish portion from the metal chevron portion in about thirty seconds.

I liked the ombre look, but the yellow/gold wasn’t working with my teal/purple/green color scheme, so I decided to create my own ombre art over top of it. Now the smart thing to do would have been to research techniques for creating the ombre look with paint, particularly because I am not an especially skilled artist, but this was one of those projects where I was more like, “Eh, how hard can it be?” and just went for it.

So my very un-scientific method of making ombre art was to paint a layer of purple paint, add some white to it, paint another layer of slightly lighter purple paint, add more white, etc.

When I got to the bottom of the piece, I dabbed some white paint right onto the canvas and blended it upward toward my shades of purple.

When alllllllll my paint was on the canvas, I took a paint brush for each shade and blended the colors together where they touched each other so that there was more of a seamless flow from top to bottom.

Once it dried, I just had to pop it back into its chevron holder, and I had a piece of art that matched the rest of my room!!

I was a little nervous about attempting the ombre technique since I hadn’t really done much of it before, but it was mostly just a matter of playing around with the colors until they looked the way I wanted them to– not hard at all!

Now I’m going to have to be a little more observant when I’m perusing the Target end caps because who knows– my next piece of DIY art could be waiting for me! 😀

I was so excited when I finished this piece because I was finally able to call my fabulously feminine home office complete!

Have a wonderful week!

  1. Looks great to me! That’s the technique I would have used to attempt ombre artwork, too. 🙂 Looking forward to the reveal of your finished office!

Happy Easter Monday to you! It’s a national holiday here in Germany, so I’m enjoying another day off.

Sweet! I tend not to grab clearance items unless I have something specific in mind, but I love the idea of adding a little paint to make it work for your space. I’ll start looking at clearance decor with new eyes after today. 🙂

I just passed over this one last week at our local target…the color didn’t go in my home…nice to know it comes apart so easily..might just head back there this week and see if it’s still there!!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Yes! It just has those little tabs that you can bend back and forth (like on a picture frame) in the back, so it was super simple to take apart! Hope you’re having a wonderful week, Cheryl! Thanks so much for stopping by!

  9. I’ve got the same art from Target but in the blue. I bought it because it was on clearance but now it’s in a closet since I couldn’t find a spot for it.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Oooh I didn’t know they had it in blue too! Mine laid around for a while as well– I was glad to finally be able to use it! Hope you’re having a wonderful week, Andrea!

  11. Lovely idea, love a bargain. I’ve learnt to go with my gut instinct, so if I see something that’s a bargain and I know I could use it ‘ somewhere’ not necessarily knowing where and I can afford it, I’ll get it. I always end up finding a place for it, a lot of times using it for something not originally designed for. Love your creativity. And happy Easter, love all your pics – Truly family photos :)x

  13. Love it Abby! So cute and fresh!! And your family pictures are adorable. I totally feel your pain- our last few attempts haven’t gone too smoothly either!!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Um, seriously– these boys!! Why won’t they cooperate for their poor blogging mamas? Maybe when they’re teenagers? 😉 Thank you so much, Krista! Have a great night!
