Our Christmas Dining Room at Orchard House

Hi, friends! It has been so fun to be able to share our Christmas decor and some of the progress we’ve made on our new house these past few weeks!

Since we just moved into our house about 3 months ago, our dining room is still a work in progress, but I’m excited to show you some of the updates we’ve made so far. C’mon in!

A Classic Christmas Dining Room

I was standing right by our front door when I took this photo, so this is one of the views that greets you when you enter our home. (If you would turn the other way, you’d see a small entry area and a hallway leading to our living room.)

One of the first things I did in this space was change out the light fixture. Since we used a community builder rather than building a custom home, they just put in standard fixtures; we didn’t get to choose. The fixture that was in this room found a new home with a friend of ours, and we put up this one that had a little more bling and was more our style!

This was really the first time I had dressed up our dining room in the new house, and it was fun to deck out the table to match the rest of our home’s red, silver, black and white color scheme. I found this cute buffalo check runner on Etsy, and I knew it would be the perfect foundation for the rest of our table.

I kept the settings simple, with a wooden charger + white plate topped with a red napkin and a place card. (If you’re looking for a fun way to fold your napkins for your holiday place settings, don’t miss these 3 cute napkin folds for Christmas!)

I made the mini wreaths out of a cute garland I found at Target’s Dollar Spot. I simply cut off a length of the garland, formed it into a double layered circle, and wrapped the ends around the wreath to secure it. So easy!

And I loved them so much I made a bigger version for the back of our chairs as well, held by a red satin ribbon…

Now I must confess… I didn’t make the pretty apple tart that I used for the centerpiece. I bought it at Trader Joe’s. ? But it looked cute and was the perfect size for my little cake stand! (And it was yummy too!)

I surrounded the cake stand with some faux greenery that I had picked up at Michael’s and wove in some pretty silver bulbs that also light up. (Wait until you see them lit for my night tour next week– love!) I added in some silvery trees that I already owned to add some height, and I had a simple, beautiful centerpiece.

I have to mention the silverware! It belonged to my mother’s mother, whom I never got to meet, so it is always so special when I get to bring it out for big occasions because it feels like pat of her is part of our day.

Once I had the main pieces of the table in place, I added in a few extra details, like candles, pretty ornaments here and there, and cranberries and mint in the water glasses to make them look extra festive.

If you missed our Christmas hutch decor earlier this week, you can see it all in this post. It is one of my favorite pieces to decorate each season!

As far as the rest of the room goes, I wouldn’t say we have our “final” decor in this room yet (but really is any decor ever truly final?! 😉 ), but I did hang a few framed wreaths as well as the “In Christ Alone” canvases that I made (similar tutorial here), which actually hung in the dining area of our last house as well.

Oh and the wood shutters! We are LOVING them– I really think they make such a great statement in this space! They are from Select Blinds, and I am going to do a whole post about the installation process soon, so keep an eye out for that. (Hint: It’s way easier than you think!)

So that’s the grand tour! This room is definitely a work in progress, but I’m thrilled with what we’ve been able to accomplish over the past few months that we’ve lived here. It has been such a fun process, and I’m enjoying every minute of it!

Abby, just like always, your styling is beautiful. I love the parallels between the greenery on the plates and behind the chairs. So cute! Also, I have a set of China that my grandparents got as a wedding gift that I only use on special occasions. It feels so special to bring out something that’s a family heirloom. I find that set even more special since my grandfather passed a few years ago. There are little mementos all over our house that I cherish more now. It’s a great way to honor her, even if you never met her!

  3. Abby, it’s just beautiful… Amazing how quickly you made it yours! I’m curious about the wreaths and place cards on the table… Do you have a tutorial I missed? 😉 Thanks for the constant inspiration!

Thank you so much, Sara! For the wreaths, I had found a garland at Target’s dollar spot and cut it into smaller pieces. I made a double loop and then twisted the ends around the wreath to hold it in place. I hope this helps! Have a wonderful week!

Your dining room is absolutely beautiful! I’m pinning this one for next year so I can copy what you have done. I’m terrible at decorating on my own but pretty good at mimicking the designs of others. 😉 I just love your style.

  8. The dining room looks so festive! I love the light fixture! I want to replace a few in our home but am overwhelmed at choosing one!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thank you so much, Jennifer! I hear you– lighting choices are hard! Our new house came with very few overhead lights, so I need to choose a bunch, but I keep putting it off because it’s a little overwhelming. One step at a time, I guess! Have a Merry Christmas!
