Something that no one ever told me when we were moving into a new house is how many decisions I would have to make. Friends, it is A LOT of decisions. Now don’t get me wrong– all of these are incredibly fun choices that I get to make, and I’m loving it. But with all of them happening pretty much at the same time, it can still be a little overwhelming!

I had to decide what purpose each room would serve. I had to decide how we were going to arrange our existing furniture to work with a completely different house and floor plan. I still need to decide which color to paint each room. And I have to choose light fixtures. Lots and lots of light fixtures.

Our house came with many, many rough ins for light fixtures, but very few actual fixtures. Some fixtures, like those in the bedrooms, we had to choose right away if we wanted any overhead lighting at all. After we had chosen the essentials, though, I kind of came to a stand still, mostly because I felt like there were so many options that I didn’t know where to start!

When we started to make improvements in the kitchen, I decided it was time to make some choices for the pendants over the island. We didn’t have an island in our last house, so I had never looked at pendants before, and the task seemed a little daunting. We had three rough-ins for pendants and our island is fairly large. It is also an unconventional shape, which meant that the lights would be offset, rather than right in a row. I was also determined to keep my choice pretty affordable, since purchasing three pendants can add up quickly!

TA-DA!!

After ordering one set of lights, not liking them, and sending them back… and then ordering another set, having them backordered, ultimately deciding they weren’t the right choice, and canceling them… we finally decided on these cuties that we found at Overstock, and I could not be happier! I think they add a great little touch to our kitchen and (spoiler alert) I love how they coordinate with the fixtures we’ve chosen for the living room and sunroom as well.

UPDATE: We actually moved these pendants to our hallway and replaced them with some that are similar to these ones! See why in this post.

Hi Abby, thanks so much for another post full of great products. We are also in the middle of choosing pendant lighting for our kitchen, which we recently madeover.. I love your choice by the way:) I was wondering if you installed the lighting yourself or hired someone? If you did it yourself, would you be able to do a tutorial of how you installed pendant lights where there were can lights?

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thanks, Briana! We had electricians come in to install them. Sorry! 🙂

Hi Abby, I was just browsing the web and found this article. These are very beautiful pendant lights. I think that my wife should love these. I am wondering if these can be delivered to Buffalo, NY. Where can we get these?

  8. I think these look great. Light fixtures are one of the things I need to update in my house in several rooms and I just can’t seem to decide on what I want. And the ones I have somewhat liked have been very expensive, of course lol. Hopefully I have some luck once I really get serious about updating the light fixtures.

    1. justagirlabby says:

Thanks so much, Rose! It can certainly be a challenge making that decision! Good luck! 🙂

  9. Great Choice Abby! I can totally appreciate how tough these decisions can be especially if you need to get your husband to agree. My hubby and I have very different taste.

I live how timeless these pendants are and they do add a pop to the white kitchen.

  12. Hey Abby!
Love your post! After checking out some of the stuff in your post, I see myself more in the minimalist side when it comes to home design and decors. That’s why huge and dangling chandeliers was never been my favorite. Looking at the examples, I can really see that there’s more to being minimalist in this. I just love how each fixtures and pendant lights matches the mood of every kitchen.
Right now, I am considering to change the light fixtures, and I hope to see some that are perfect for wood inspired kitchen. Glad if you can make another post about this.
    Thanks again!

Abby sooo cute! We are at the end of our planning stages for our forever kitchen!!! EEEKKK….SO excited but you are right, so many choices!! Feel like I am building a house all over again…we are gutting our existing kitchen and the only thing staying are the original hardwoods…SO I am also on the search for lighting…so many options!

HOw do you feel these give you the right and enough light? I like these but hubby thinks they are “Birdhouses” trying to get him to my side..lol..

Beautiful kitchen and thanks for sharing!

    1. justagirlabby says:

Yes, they’re plenty bright. We also have recessed lights in the kitchen, but even when those are off, the pendants provide plenty of light. My hubby was actually the one who found these and liked them in the first place, lol. To each his own, I guess!

  14. Mary Layton says:

    Hey Abby,

Great post! Me and my husband ordered some contemporary fixtures from a site called Modern Place . Might be worth checking out. Where did you get the recessed lights from?

    Thanks,
    Mary

    1. justagirlabby says:

Ooh I will look it up! Thanks for the tip! The recessed lights were just built into our house, so they are whatever Ryan Homes uses. 🙂 Hope you’re having a wonderful week!

  15. Hi Abby,

We are re-doing our kitchen and I love the pendants you chose. I did look online and they appear to have a grey looking glass, but the glass in yours looks clear. Is the glass the color it is in the photos of your kitchen? Thanks!

    1. justagirlabby says:

The glass in my exact pendants is definitely clear. I haven’t seen all of the ones I linked to in person, so I can’t guarantee that they would all be clear as well, but I am fairly sure that they are.

  16. Julie Varney says:

    Hi Abby
I have a kitchen very similar to yours with lots of small spots in the ceiling. I am having trouble convincing my husband it is possible to have pendants above the breakfast bar without having to dig holes in the walls for new wiring etc.(an absolute no-no ?)
Could you let me know how you installed your pendant lights? Did you make use of any existing fittings and are your pendants switched independently of the other lights. Sorry to bombard you with questions but this is a long running ‘discussion’ with my hubby? many thanks

    1. justagirlabby says:

Hi, Julie! We actually built our house, so we chose the pendant placement before they even broke ground and the wiring was done when the rest of the electric was put in, before any drywall went up or anything. I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful! I’m sure if you would call an electrician, they would be able to give you a quick answer! Best of luck with your ‘discussion”– I can so relate to those! lol!

      ~Abby =)
