It’s kitchen update time again, and today we are talking about lighting! Y’all, I never realized how many decisions I would have to make when we started this kitchen reno– so much pressure! One thing I knew I wanted to change from the very beginning, though, was the overhead light. As I admitted when I first told you about our kitchen plans, I actually chose this not-so-cute light myself shortly after we moved in 6 years ago:

I’m pretty sure I just walked into the home improvement store, chose the least expensive flush-mount light they had, and bought it, which totally wasn’t worth it because here we are a few years later replacing the fixture again. Eek!

Because I didn’t want to make the same mistake this time around, I began to do research. I went on Pinterest and did Google image searches to try to find photos of kitchen lights that I liked. It turned out to be harder than I thought. Most kitchens I saw either had a big, beautiful chandelier or pretty pendant lighting over an island, which wouldn’t work for us because we don’t have room for an island or they had can lighting, which we decided not to go with.

So since there seemed to be a lack of lighting options for smaller, low-ceilinged kitchens, I thought I would just help everybody out and round up a few of my favorite alternatives to the traditional domed light (aka “boob light”) that we had before. As I was scoping out the many, many options at build.com, I realized that lighting really can be beautiful and affordable, and I came up with 10 fixtures that fit the bill. Want to see my picks?

1. Carlisle Semi Flush Ceiling Fixture– I love the sparkle of a chandelier, but our ceiling was too low to realistically accommodate one. This pretty little fixture gives the best of both worlds– tons of sparkle without taking up tons of space.

2. Semi-Flush Fixture with Clear Cone Shaped Shade from the Congress Collection– Isn’t the shape of this one so cool? And I love that it has a clear shade so you can see the bulb.

3. Giotta Semi-Flush Fixture with Drum Linen Shade– Gold? Yes, please! The color and pattern on this fixture are stunning.

4. Silvain Semi-Flush Fixture with Silver Lurex Shade– Simple and beautiful, and I liked that the silver shade was a different option from the typical white or cream.

5. Flush Mount Fixture from the Orion Collection– I wanted to be sure to include some flush-mount options in the mix because sometimes we’re short on room height! I thought this little light was so classy looking.

6. Loft Semi-Flush Fixture– I found myself being drawn toward a clean, simple look for our kitchen, and this light is just that.

7. JVI Designs Semi-Flush Fixture– I thought this one was cool because you can get an orb look without having to have the space for a gigantic orb.

8. Greta Veil Semi-Flush Fixture with Drum Frosted Glass Shade– Another gold option! I’m smitten!

9. Burnt Sienna Flush Mount Fixture– I liked the burlap-ish look of the shade on this fixture, and it’s another pretty flush mount option!

10. Freemont Semi-Flush Fixture– Can we just talk about the adorableness of this little light for a minute?! Of course it jumped out at me because of its aqua shade– I think I need to find somewhere in my house to incorporate this one!

So what did we pick? I just had to go with clean and simple!

I loved that the look of this light was more classic and could be pretty versatile in the space in case I (or future owners) decided to change up the color scheme or feel of the kitchen at some point. The shade has a slight texture to it that I also really loved.

And since we tore down the little semi-divider between the kitchen and foyer, making them one open space, we put the same light in the entry to tie the two spaces together a little bit more.

I just love the fresh, clean look of these fixtures and the way they really take our kitchen up a notch. Bye-bye boob light! 🙂

One thing that was awesome about shopping online at build.com instead of in a store this time around is that I had sooooo many more options to choose from. I wasn’t limited to just a few items that are on a shelf; there are literally hundreds and hundreds of choices, and they are easy to sort by type, style, finish, etc. (Also I could be in my jammies– win!)

These are great options! We upgraded a little with our dome lights on our first floor, but upstairs in our kid’s rooms we did the cheap ones – now we wish we splurged on the ceiling fans … Thinking about making the switch only a few short months later. Thanks for the great inspiration.

  2. I love the one you picked very much a crisp look. I also like #4 and #10! I love watching you transform your kitchen, looks great!

  3. I love the after on your kitchen! I have some bad “boob lights” in my house and am itching to get rid of them. My house was a bit of a flip so I curse these cheap lights- haha! I do have one chandelier in my house and it is amazing what good lighting does for the space.

Such a great choice and I love your round-up. Sometimes online shopping is also a little harder with all those options! Decision paralysis. Going to check out some of your choices.

The lighting you chose was perfect! Then I also love the butlers zink: I really want one of those in my kitchen 🙂

  6. Does the light you installed give off enough clear, bright light to work in the evening hours?

I love the style of lights that you installed! I’ve often admired them online, but I’m always intimidated by the host of reviews with complaints that their new light actually doesn’t work well as a light, only a decor piece. Kitchens that have lots of natural light further muddy the waters, because it’s impossible to tell until it’s too late.

I love the look of your kitchen–especially the sink!

I LOVE #10! So adorable and that mint green? I mean common?

Wow what a transformation from before, looks amazing now!

These are all such cute lights. I especially love #3 which looks a lot like the fixture we just put in our dining room. Great selections and such a lovely transformation you made!
